My wife was told last friday that her company is sending her to their DFW office in June. I can work from home or our Dallas office and twins are finishing middle school in 3 months so it is not a huge deal for us. We are kind of excited to move to a warmer place. She will get a relocation/real estate agent but we feel that it is better to start our home work now. We need a youngish (below 25 yrs) 4000 sq ft house with good public schools, 4 bed, 4 bath, 3 car garage, pool, office and short commute to Dallas Downtown. How much money do we need to buy in a nice town and by the way which towns are considered 'desireable'?

What do you consider a "short commute"?
Is her office IN Downtown Dallas?
Is your office IN Downtown Dallas or another area of Dallas?
What kind of budget are you looking at right now?
Are you going to rent first THEN buy? Which I HIGHLY recommend.

There are PLENTY of very nice areas that fit your other criteria as far as schools and age of house and such.

It's not gonna get you one in West Plano, either...unless you go way north, and then your commute just got ickier.

Ok...so we just spent the last 5 years looking for a house very specifically in the Plano side of 75093 (staying in Plano schools), and this is a correct comment. We thought, "Oh, $650k is a reasonable price to find a good house." Bullsh*t. We wound up having to finally go up to $800k to find what we wanted. Looking at the comps showed us everything was selling over 90% of asking.
The inventory is hit or miss, a lot of stuff isn't updated, and what you can't get for the money was shocking to us. We really thought the economy downturn would help us, but it didn't.
I think the op can get more for their money going a little south of here - that will also make the commute better.
