Miami to DFW - Need community recommendations
Hi -
I am relocating from Miami to the DFW area. For some unknown reason I am reasearching more than ever. My office will be out of Carrollton and I am currently looking in Plano.
Elementary schools are important as well as resale in 3 to 4 years.
Any recommendations?

You are in paradise now. Why move to DFW? Carrollton is ghetto. The whole DFW mentality sucks, there's not much culture here.
Friendly advise, think about your move 1 million times.
I moved here last year from So. Cali & NYC, I made a mistake of getting into real estate. Real Estate here is so slow, if you have 10 years to wait for good appreciation, then more power to you. They charge school taxes on top of the property tax, so if you don't have kids, this will suck.
Plano is okay. Lots of pretentious overhauled people, more so than L.A.
This state is the land of the flakes and $30K/year millionaires.
If this floats your boat, then welcome to Dallas.

You don't mention what your price range is. Zip 75093 in Plano is closest to Carrollton. Barksdale, Brinker and Centennial Elementary are in the area and they are all great schools.

cosmochick obviously did not do her research before jumping or she would have realized that the real estate market in DFW is relatively stable compared to Orange Co or NYC---some markets have seen pretty quick run-ups like the condos in downtown FTW and some areas of raw land development--but most residential does not have the strong up-side...
buy in a quality neighborhood with good, stable schools and you probably won't lose money when you sell--making money is more iffy--depends on the market/financials, the price range, the individual home you buy...

Cosmochick chose poorly. Real Estate prices inside LBJ have gone up almost exponentially.

Actually, why not look in Allen or Frisco rather than Plano. Frisco is just north of Carrollton. Also, Flower Mound is a very attractive and desirable market.

I personally resent anyone saying that Carrollton is ghetto. Yes, there are older parts but that doesn't make Carrollton ghetto. There are some exceptional areas to live and some exceptional schools in those areas. I would not be raising my child in this community if I thought it was not safe. Get a life, cosmochick, before bashing something you know nothing about.
Then your comment about the state is a land of flakes was totally uncalled for.
Costbean, Plano, parts of Carrollton, Coppell, Lewisville, Flowermound all would have something to look into for both schools and home resale value. It is just a matter of continuing your research and working with a qualified realator. Determining what you want for your family etc... I found what I wanted in north Carrollton/Lewisville schools area and feel very safe and happy with my decision for my family. We are close to several malls, our church, the airport, tollways, highway,etc... Goodluck with your search and welcome to Texas. We're not all like cosmochick I promise.

Why do they charge a horrrendous school tax in Texas if you have no kids?

No income tax. Also we're educating all the illegals that don't pay taxes.

I think there are some neighborhood (may be 55 and older type?) in FL, where you don't have to pay school tax, but you still have to pay property tax.
