Need major advice from locals...
Our family will be moving to the Dallas area and we're looking to buy a house, but are having a hard time knowing where to start. We're hoping to find an area with good schools, a decent commute downtown, and obviously safe and family-friendly. We're also hoping to find a decent-sized home as we're a family of six--so definitely a factor.
We'd appreciate any thoughts or ideas on where to start our home search.

We need some more information. Where will you be working, do you have small children, what type of lifestyle do you have, will you be renting or buying, how much do you plan on spending?

See: http://www.city-data.com/forum/dalla...-lakewood.html and search here for Lakewood, M Streets, East Dallas, Stonewall Jackson Elementary, Lakewood Elementary, Woodrow Wilson High, etc.
Zip codes are mainly 75214 and 75206 - also 75223.

SOTS - have you ever been to the Lakewood 4th of July Parade? The Lakewood Elementary Carnival? The Lakewood Street Dance? The Lakewood Home Tour? The Lakewood Service League Party? A Woodrow football game? The Homecoming Parade and Pep Rally? The annual Musical?
I can't imagine any events more family oriented than these...It's more Norman Rockwell than Norman Rockwell...

It may not be my place to say something, but it is possible for everyone to act like civil adults. I'm sure you are just as proud of your neighborhood, as Lakewooder is of his. Part of the enjoyment of these forums is the lack of flame wars and bickering.
Maybe the OP would like Dallas, maybe they wouldn't.

Joe Blow? LOL. I know where Lakewood is. I live right next to it. If I had kids I would definitely consider it. I'm glad I am not a "Joe Blow" type.
(FYI, I do not think families that live in the burbs are "Joe Blow" types)
