I would really look into Stonebriar or Stonebridge based on where you said you plan to live. I am a 4 handicap and both of those courses are great and challenging! And the best thing about both of those courses, they are Club Corp owned and for a few dollars more you will have access to play all the other CCA courses in the DFW area and around the nation if you travel. Another course I would look into is Gentle Creek up in Prosper. Great golf course but it's only golf (no swim or tennis). It's a golf club only. But if you have 30K to use, I would look into Stonebriar and Stonebridge. You are on the right track with both of those clubs.

FYI, not to bash Brookhaven, but I don't think you would enjoy this club over the 2 I mentioned above. They are a tennis club first and golf second. They are also CCA and you could play out there anyways if you join a club closer to your home area.

I am not sure if you are still in need of info on local courses, but I just stumbled on to this thread. I have played a vast majority of the private courses in the area, and live in Frisco. For the money, Stonebriar is your best bet. Great course and access to the Fazio resort course as well. Stonebridge (Dye course) is about the toughest test around. Craig Ranch is also very nice, but only 18 holes. The course is LONG, and in our wind can be a challenge. There are multiple Club-Corp courses in the area, so you get that added benefit by joining Stonebriar. If you are just interested in golf and not tennis, pool or other amenities, you might want to look at Gentle Creek in Proser (10 miles north of Frisco). It is rated one of the best kept secrets in the area.

I've played just about all of the mentioned clubs. Was a member at Stonebridge (Dye course) and loved it. With the different tee boxes it can be liked by even a hacker (like me). My neighbor was a member at PW and I lived on the Plano course once. IMHO I didn't like either PW course. The one in Plano is super hilly (they use gas carts) and dull. The one in Dallas is treed, but too many tricked out holes and blind shots.
Unfortunately, many courses in DFW are new, and are built, almost as an afterthought to the real deal, a housing development. It's like the developer said, "oh, we have to squeeze a golf course in here?" You'll be able to tell what I mean if you get a comp round on one of them.
