I used to live in Denton and commute for work into Dallas. I worked near SMU which is further than what you would be doing. It is a very long commute. Your only way in is on I-35. Traffic is stunning. The only way I could do it was leave the office before 4pm or wait until after 6pm in the evening and then I would only be on the road an hour instead of 2 hours. This was in 1988-1989 though. I can only guess it got worse.

Heading to south of DFW...mmmm I don't know about that one. Would you go I-35 to 121? Hopefully someone else knows. That looks like a tough commute on paper.

DENTON IS PHENOMINAL!!!!

its one of texas's best kept secrets. not at all an underestamate.
however the word might be getting out.

its got one of the richest and thickest cultural music and arts scenes for its size in texas.

some folks call it "berkely of the south" or "austin 20yrs ago".

they ain't lying.

more to come later.

but you probably want to know about the exact area you are moving into and the commute situation.

the area you are looking to move into is NICE. hard to go wrong there.

the commute to dallas fortworth can be chore because of traffic. thats the only bad part... but some dont mind.

denton is getting bigger and by 2015 unt will have an enrollment population of 50,000. currently its at 30k

look up "rayzor ranch".... Rayzor Ranch | Denton, Texas

someone is forcasting a base that will be able to support that here.

of course thats part of "the other" denton. lol

Oakmont CC and Shady Shores are nice areas. Traffic to Farmers Branch can be bad anywhere along southbound 35E in the mornings and northbound 35E in the evenings but usually its heaviest around Lewisville, George Bush Tollway and beyond to FB. Denton is a town experiencing growing pains that is expected with the people coming to N. Texas.

I live in Oakmont and it's a great community. It's very convenient with its access to I-35E, but traffic can be bad as has been mentioned here. Until 35 is widened in a few years, the traffic south into Dallas county can be a pain. You'll either have to go early and get off early, or go to work late and get out later to avoid the worse part. That's what some of my neighbors do and they work down in Dallas!

The commute to DFW isn't bad..I have to do that drive to DFW lots of times and it takes me about 25 minutes without traffic...as much as 40-45 minutes with traffic. I usually head down 35 to 121 Business and go that way through Lewisville all the way down. You can also take 35 down to 121 Toll but there isn't an easy way to get off 35 and on to 121 to DFW without exiting and waiting at a few lights in heavy traffic, just south of Vista Ridge Mall at the Coppell/Lewisville border. Maybe they'll consider a decent exit ramp off 35 South to 121 Toll South when they widen 35 in a few years.

Your wife's commute to DFW will also improve within about two years once FM 2499 from Flower Mound/Highland Village is extended to Corinth on the western flank of Oakmont CC and on into Denton at the State School Rd and I-35. Also, the North Texas Toll Authority is building the Lewisville Lake Toll Bridge connecting Swisher Rd east of 35 at Lake Dallas to Little Elm and Eldorado Parkway on the eastern side of the lake. This will continue on into Frisco and to the Dallas North Tollway which will then offer a faster way to get into downtown Dallas, North Dallas or Plano/Frisco without having to rely solely on I-35E. This will make what was normally a 45 minute drive to Frisco/Plano into a drive that might take 15 -20 minutes max, heading straight east.

Hope this helps answer some of your commuting questions..feel free to PM me with anything else since I live in the area.
