New owners, new tenants mean big changes for Lakewood | Dallas-Fort Worth Business News - News for Dallas, Texas - The Dallas Morning News

"You couldn’t tell the economy is on the fritz by looking at Lakewood’s Whole Foods Market.

Snagging a parking space out front sometimes can be as hard as finding a cool breeze. And it’s been that way most weekends since the store opened two years ago.

The arrival of the 50,000-square-foot up-scale grocer was one of the biggest things to happen in the East Dallas business district since its flagship movie house debuted in 1938.

And more changes are in the works — fueled in part by sweeping demographic changes in the neighborhood.

“Lakewood has been a sleeping giant,” said investor Ray Washburne, who heads the group that bought the landmark Highland Park Village last year. “People are finally waking up to the potential in Lakewood.

“It’s a phenomenal piece of property,” said Washburne, one of the owners of the Mi Cocina restaurant chain, which plans to open in Lakewood next year..."

We're talking the DMN.
They couldn't swipe any more from Wall St Journal or NYT!

Anyway...since the article is behind the paywall, I can only read the comments. Since the Matt's/MiCocina controversy continues among people I know - here is what I have observed:

1. People who don't want Matt's to leave are people do not go out to eat much in the first place. They are whining and throwing a tizz over something they are not even supporting. I know these people (I might even say some are friends).

2. People are super excited about MiCocina's arrival into Lakewood are the people who do go out to eat all the time. They drive to the Lake Highlands or West Village locations already. They are thrilled.

3. Nobody complains about the Dixie House being the Black Eyed Pea which is much more of a frozen/canned dining experience than MiCocina. Black Eyed Pea has 31 outlets while MiCocina has 15. Where is the local Lakewood uproar over Dixie House/Black Eyed Pea?

The link in the OP is to a paid subscriber site (DMN). I've pretty much washed my hands of them since they went that route.

I'll say this - give me Matt's over Mi Cocina any day of the week. And we eat out a LOT. I used to be a regular at Dixie House in Lakewood. It was one of the better home cooking places around.

What do you like at Matt's? I used to get one thing - the veggie chili relleno. I remember it being $8 and then all of the sudden $12. And now, sadly, it doesn't have all the glorious veggies on it like it used to.

At least at MiCocina, I can get the Gina's or the Karla's - both vegetarian; including the beans!...while the rest of the family meats-it-up.

I think I shall stay out of the Matt's vs. Mi Cocina contretemps at least on this thread.

So what does it mean when the HP Village owner thinks Lakewood is the next big thing and ponied up $3 million just to get Matt's lease?

I've eaten several things there including the usual enchiladas, fajitas, etc.. But the Bob Armstrong dip and the Chile Releno are what I eat the most. Nobody does those better than Matt's. Period. The only thing at Matt's that is kinda so-so for me are the beans with beer in them.

well, I don't know you but know that no one on my block is excited about Mi Cocina. Their food may be better than Matt's, but most in my circle are not looking forward to valet parking and (even more) expensive food and drinks. Matt's felt "local" while MiCocina feels like a "chain."

(and yes, parking is tight, but I would rather drive around than have the front 1/3 of the parking lot blocked for valet)

That is why I think most Lakewood people love Dixie House. It might be a Blackeyed Pea, but it is "our" Blackeyed Pea by a different name.
