Speaking of dead malls... wasn't there a smaller indoor shopping mall on Garland Rd? I'm thinking the name began with an "F", but it escapes me now... I also think the exterior was green. It was already pretty dead in the 80s and probably torn down by the 90s. It might have had only 1 or two large anchor stores, I think a movie theatre... it was similar in size to Northcross Mall in Austin.
Also, anyone know the status of the Richardson Square Mall? It was on-and-off dead for many years, but I guess they finally tore it down? What is going in it's place?
Big Town, for some reason, always made me think of the circus... maybe it was because of that roof and their sign, plus the fact that "Big Town" kinda reminded me of "Big Top" or something.

The old Lochwood mall may be the one on Garland Road that you are thinking about. I think was torn down in the late 70s or early 80s. It was at Garland Road and Jupiter. It had a Titches, JC Penney, movie theatre, El Chico, Luby's, etc.. It wasn't really enclosed but had a large center walkway area between the stores.
Richardson Square mall was essentially torn down to make room for some big box stores, however I think the Sears store still remains.

Bingo, that was it! I'm not sure why I was thinking it started with an F... definitely was Lochwood. It reminded me of the Northcross Mall here in Austin, but it was remarkable in that it suffered the fate many malls have -- but just at a much earlier date.

Thanks for the info. Many fond memories of that mall when it was still active. My first job was working at that mall.

NorthTown Mall over on Webbs Chapel at LBJ was similiar to Big Town. I remember going to the movies there as well as all of the stores there. Montgomery Wards was there and they even had the cafe in their store. I can see all of it just like it was yesterday.
Richardson Square Mall. Owned by Simon who also owns Firewheel Town Center. They really upped it a lot in the years before it was torn down and it was starting to pick back up. They had a Ross, SuperTarget, new Barnes & Noble, Sears and for awhile a Stein Mart (LOVE that store) and Dillards. I remember when it had TWO Dillard's with one being in the old Joske's location. They redid the inside food court as the mall never really had one. It was gaining in popularity but we all kind of new when Firewheel opened up it would not last long. Simon chose to tear it down basically. They made deals w/ the tenants there like Barnes & Noble to move to the new Firewheel mall by closing up there.
Nowadays Richardson Square still has the Sears, SuperTarget, Ross and a new Lowe's. It is basically a large strip center w/ the large box retailers instead of the typical mall small stores. The Chick-Fil-A in front of it does a SLAMMING business (what CFA doesn't, lol).

There was a mall at Webb Chapel and LBJ? I live about a mile away and this is the first I've ever heard of it. That's about where "North Dallas" ends and the barrio begins now.

Forest and Webbs Chapel, yes. You're too young to know about it.

Other than North Park...North Town Mall was like THE place in far north Dallas. Went to MANY a movie at the multi cinema.
I was in the Soap Box Derby and we got to display our cars at North Town Mall in 1967. That year I was one win away from going to Ackron, Ohio!

Yes, it was an AWESOME mall. It even had a Margo's (womens clothing) and a "designer" handbag stall as well as a pet store, movie theater (either 4 or 6 screens ), Montgomery Ward and a Wyatt's Cafeteria. It was a HOPING place even up into the early 80's.

We went there so many times it was unreal. To us it was a REAL mall. For todays standards it would not past muster for a strip center. LOL!!! But back then it had everything you needed. It really was a pretty good little mall. I loved watching them make cotton candy at the food place there inside the mall. Going to the movies was fun. I still can picture it all. Remember when they revamped the theater and you didn't have to go inside to get to it? I thought that was totally uncalled for.......lol. Now it is all gone.
BTW, it was in the southeast corner of Webbs Chapel and LBJ. Across Forest from North Town was a Lusky's with the horse on top of the building and an El Fenix Cafeteria. It was a cafeteria in that you went thru the line and ordered what you wanted unlike all of their other locations. Across Webbs Chapel was a Polar Bear Ice Cream place and a donut store (both free standing). Montgomery Wards had their car service center out on Webbs Chapel and I thought it stayed open even after the store closed. On the southwest corner of Forest and Webbs Chapel was a Pancho's.

Lochwood had a pretty good movie theater back in the day - JC Penney moved 'up the street' to there from E. Grand at I-30 (R.L. Thornton). There was another JC Penney at Casa View. Next to Lochwood was a pretty cool arcade/game place called Carousel Raceway. And there was a Buckminster Fuller geodesic dome Citzen's Bank by that (owned by the Cothrums).
Northtown had some pretty good shows at its theaters (how many were there - anyhow multiple theaters - beyond two - was a new concept then). Strange how there was a Wyatt's on Forest and another on Webb's Chapel!

It's odd how everyone older than me calls it "Webbs Chapel." I knew the original Webb's Chapel, which was actually on what is now Valley View between Josey and I-35, was named that, but the street signs and spoken usage I've always heard is "WEBB Chapel." Is this a recent change?
I think that intersection has a Burlington Coat Factory, a Cordon Bleu cooking school, a bank, a Taco C, and a Whataburger. Across Webb Chapel is Cinemark 17 and the Cinemark IMAX, and just across Forest is our local El Fenix.
