Take US 281 instead of I35 either going down or coming back. Much more scenic than I35.

If you take 281, stop at the Bluebonnet Cafe in Marble Falls for lunch and a slice of their amazing pie!

For some 'fresh off the cow' BBQ, hit The Salt Lick (in Driftwood, just rast of Austin...not the one in Round Rock). Awesome!

It you get hot from your sightseeing, you could grab a tube and a cooler of beer, and float down the Guadalupe river in New Braunfels. Good times!

Enchanted Rock is fun to climb!

Anyhow, check out the Alamo for sure. If you need a place to stay, there is a really nice old hotel with 100 ft of the Alamo called the Minger. Teddy Roosevelt used to have a drink there at the bar and they say the guy who did Mount Rushmore did some of his planning there as well. The river walk is just across the road and a lot of fun on weekends. If you like Mexican food, check out the market square! It's got a huge Mexican culture flavor to it for one thing and there is a really good restaurant, can't remember the name but it's well worth the wait.

Goliad TX is a stones throw away and home of one the most historical Battles in Texas.

Austin, the capital is a must see...day and night! There is a lot of good places to eat all over Austin. Kirby Lane comes to mind as well as County-line BBQ.

Mi Tierra

It's open 24 hours and has good Mexican food, and GREAT Mexican pastries to go at their bakery. Pumpkin empanadas....Mmmmm...

On your way back, stop in the city of West, Texas. (just north of Waco). Grab some kolaches for breakfast the next day. Delicious!

Pack some water on ice in case of a breakdown.

These might be really generic, but the guacamole at Boudro's on the river walk really is THAT good, and Moonshine (restaurant) in Austin is well worth the visit for the popcorn alone.
