Take a look in area code 75214. Here is a house I have ridden my bike by many, many times. It's on Fisher road. I know this persons neighbor:
7207 Fisher Road, Dallas, TX 75214 - Prudential Texas Properties
$1.6M. If you drive this street, you and your wife will probably fall in love with the neighborhood. You'd be a 5-minute walk from White Rock Lake and your house is on over an acre of land.
I would suggest staying away from Swiss Avenue - that isn't the best area to walk around... and it sounds like having a walkable neighborhood is important to you.

Just based on what you've posted, I would say find something in the Highland Park school distict - Highland Park or University Park. You'll give up some of what you want, a large lot and diversity, but you will get many other things you are looking for - superior public schools, guaranteed home appreciation, people your age paying cash for houses, it's close to downtown, close to Love Field (although I know frequent flyers who still fly to Houston out of DFW because they want miles on certain airlines) and a strong sense of community.

I walk on/across Swiss all the time. My dogs are now gone but we went almost every day for years...

You do not need a private school in Lakewood. Our top kids outperform the private schools and have the advantage of growing up with their neighbors who become life-long friends. And we have diversity, something of which HPISD has none.

lh_newbie,
The link you posted links me to a home on Greenbrier instead of the one you were trying to get me to.

I used to live in Highland Park IL and know New Trier. I agree that the Highland Park school district would be the one for you. Hillcrest, Woodrow (called Woodrow instead of Wilson...perhaps Lakewooder can explain) and maybe WT White are the only schools in the Dallas district where I would consider sending my children. Highland Park isn't terribly diverse but you can't beat the public school education that your child will receive there.
Forget Las Colinas if you want public schools. By "demographic changes", people mean that the Latino population has just exploded in both Irving and Carrollton/Farmers Branch. However, there isn't as competition for class rank in those schools as in Highland Park. I don't have any facts to back this but I think it's safe to say that there aren't as many 4 year college bound students at those schools. Something to think about for public schools...

considering that you are successful, hard working folks, I imagine your kids are as well. As long as they are safe, they aren't going to learn more being in HP than in Irving. Wherever you live making what you make, your kids school will likely be filled with children from similar families.
