Where can we find an affordable ski resort with kid lessons and ski rental etc. within a driving distance (not more than 5 hours) from DFW metroplex? I've looked at different places in New Mexico and a few in Colorado, but there is too much information.

We are planning a 4-5-day vacation at the end of December. I don't know how to ski but would like to learn with my young children (7 and 4). Is there a place for a beginner in a nice town where we can walk around when we get tired of skiing? Our budget is limited and don't want to spend over $200 a day.

Thanks in advance for your advices.

You won't find anything within 5 hours , the closest is New Mexico and the area of Santa Fe , it would be a 10 hours drive . One of the best Ski Town is Brekenridge In Colorado , and that would be a 12 /14 hours drive .

Unless you're into cross country skiing across the flat prairie of Oklahoma, there is no skiing within 5 hours of Dallas. Closest is Angel Fire or Taos in NM; about a 10 hour drive.

Also, $200 / day for a family of 4 is not a realistic budget. You're going to at least need $100/night for a budget motel. You can probably find a "kids ski free" deal, but adult lift passes are going to be at least $60-75/day per adult. Ski retails are easily $30/day per person. Then you've got to eat. I'd budget around $1700-1800 for 4 nights/ 3 days of skiing, not including gas/ plane ticket to get there.

Skiing is not an inexpensive hobby!!

It is! At least 12 hours. And can be dangerous if you have to drive during / after a snowstorm.

You can't do it for that amount of money. You can drive - lots of people drive up to Colorado or over to New Mexico. And you can get deals on lodging and lift tickets if you book early.

But please understand the costs. You need to sign everyone up for ski school, which will run you $120/day/person (you absolutely cannot learn to ski by falling down the mountain, and that is not safe for you or other skiiers.) Rentals will be at least $25/day/person. Lodging is not cheap even if you book ahead, assume at least $1000/week. You all have to eat, and ski areas are expensive in terms of food, even if you cook at home.

I love skiing, but every year I add up how much it costs and really weigh whether it's worth it. It always is to me...

What everyone else said.

The closest "resorts" are Cloudcroft and Ruidoso in New Mexico. Those are a 9-10 hour drive, and neither one are particularly good skiing or much of a resort feel. Cloudcroft doesn't even open some years, due to lack of snow. IMO, I've seen better conditions at local ski joints in Iowa, Illinois, and Minnesota. That should tell you something.

Realistically, you're looking at driving to Colorado, and the costs will be far more than you're budgeting.
