I want to buy some chocolate packs (those minis and fun size / bit size) to stock them for some time to come. The walmart near my home stocks chocolates round the year but i have heard that halloween is the right time to buy chocolates ?
Is it so ?
If so then what difference in terms of varieties etc will i get compared to any other time of the year ?
Also what stores should i visit for the chocolates, preferably in Plano (i stay at 75 and spring creek) ?

Uh it's mostly the same stuff you can get any time of the year. I don't buy a lot of chocolate so I don't notice a big price difference but manufacturers tend to print more coupons for chocolate this time of year through Christmas.

Chocolate doesn't keep all that well so I don't know why you'd want to build a stockpile of it.

I may be going back to my home country next year probably before next Halloween and hence wanted to do that. But yes it does make sense to buy when actually i will be going rather than now.

As mentioned, these chocolates will not keep very well - they get stale and bloom. Chocolate bloom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Is there a particular type of chocolate you are looking for? These packaged Halloween chocolates are the exact same style as you find at Christmas, Valentines and Easter - just different wrappers.

If you are looking for nicer chocolates, go to Central Market. I adore Askinosie Dark Milk Chocolate. It's about $9 for a large sized bar, but it's a single source bean mixed with goat milk - it has a unique flavor.

people on this site and the FTW forum have said that the chocolates that Aldi stores stock--which come from Germany I believe--are good quaity, especially at their price.
If I buy large pack of what I like (Reese's peanut butter cups) I freeze them and take out 3 or 4 cups at a time to eat--
they thaw quickly but can be eaten just about frozen since they are small and can be bitten off or eaten whole--depending on their size--melt in your mouth...
I think that some chocolate will turn white when it is frozen--think that has more to do with moisture and fat content maybe--have not noticed anything like that with my Reese's

and you should never freeze/thaw/refreeze any food

I've read that in general, the shelf life of most chocolate is around a year, but I've also read that for some chocolate, it will last almost indefinitely. I just recently looked into this since we stopped by a Russell Stover outlet store the other day, and they were selling chocolates from last Christmas and last Valentine's Day for 75% off. I asked store personnel and they said these chocolates will stay fresh much longer than a year. Bought a box of Valentine chocolates and it seemed fine, although one was "extra chewy" to me.

The kind of chocolate I'd eat wouldn't keep that long. Not only do you get bloom but texture/taste changes as well.
