It's been a while since I've had to go renew my Texas Driver's License. I tried a few weeks ago at a Plano location and it was obscene the long line they had there. I'm not sure how many hours it would have taken to get through that.

So now I want to try in Dallas which I understand how 3 locations for revewals. Do any of you Dallas experts know which of these 3 have the shortest lines? Or any other advice of when the best time to go is, besides when it first opens up?

I went last week to the one at City Hall in downtown Dallas last week a little after 4 P.M. There was only about 5-6 people ahead of me.

My wife went to this one a week or two ago about 4:30 and there was only a few people in front of her.

City Hall is definitely the place to go if you only need to renew. (They don't administer either the written or driving test in that location, however.) It is best to arrive mid-morning before lunch or after about 1:30.

Just get there an hour before any open and you'll be ok...assuming the computers don't crash. Good luck.

Based on experience.... 4 hours or so.

Unless there's a reason you need to do it in person you can renew your license online too.

Here's a direct link to the website: Your Texas Drivers License

Good luck! (It took me roughly 8 hours of waiting total to get my license during the summer, there's an error on it, but I haven't checked it yet, simply because I know it'll take forever)

ER, I went to the Lewisville office and was out of there in approx two (2) hours. The Plano office is always ugly, but my son got through there in approx 1.5 hours (the line moves pretty fast) but you're right, when you drive up and see the line, it can be pretty discouraging.
I thought you moved to San Diego!

Hey MovingAloha,

Yeah, I was going with a friend that doesn't have a car right now. Yes, I moved to San Diego but occasionally in Dallas for work and have several friends there.

Moderator cut: See Comment

I'll just repeat that I would NOT recommend the downtown branch.

If you just need to renew your DL just go to a storefront location like Rockwall, if you need to take a test try the Garland DPS location.
