Well Dallas I have just arrived, part of a month long vacation from New Zealand.

After catching the game and checking in at La Quinta Uptown does anyone know if there are any blues band playing close by? I know it's Sunday and all.

I don't have a car so for tonight will have to find some place close.

Thanks

Welcome to Dallas! I love New Zealand. What brings you here?

Not sure if they are open on Sunday nights but Tucker's Blues in Deep Ellum (east of downtown) is a great place to hear some blues. If it's not open, you can go next door and have a great burger at Twisted Root or go across the street and have phenomenal traditional Italian pizza at Cane Rosso.

Tucker's Blues

If you're just looking to people watch on Uptown, you can take the free trolley on McKinney Avenue and hit some of the bars (McKinney Avenue Tavern, Idol Rich, Black Friar, Lotus, etc.) or hang out at West Village (a development with restaurants, bars, and an indie movie theater). Or get a cab and hit the bars along Henderson Avenue (Barcadia, Beauty Bar, J. Black's, etc.) which isn't too far from Uptown.

You can also check these sites for their listings of things to do:

Hey thanks for the quick response. I haven't had a decent vacation in over 10 years so I've taken a month off to over to the States and visit family, we're US citizens.

I have cousin down by College Station and we just traveled up and watched the game. WOW is that a big stadium or what !

I've got 3-4 days here in Dallas to check the place out so any idea's from people would be appreciated. My brother says I have to go to Fort Worth to watch them run some cattle through town but I also wouldn't mind checking out the museum, and any other cultural stuff.

Thanks for the info earlier

Here's a thumbnail guide on stuff to do:

1) The Sixth Floor Museum -- The museum on the site where JFK was assassinated.

2) Dallas Museum of Art/Nasher Sculpture Garden/Crow Museum of Asian Art -- The three museums right next to each other in downtown Dallas in the Arts District

3) The Stockyards -- For a bit of cowboy culture, go the Stockyards and go to a country like Billy Bob's (which bills itself as the world's largest honky tonk) or White Elephant Saloon, and perhaps check out the rodeo that takes place Friday and Saturday nights.

4) Fort Worth Cultural District -- As long as you're in Fort Worth, check out their excellent museums including the Kimbell, the Modern, the Amon Carter, and the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame.

5) Reunion Tower -- Back in Dallas, have drinks at the rotating restaurant at the top of Reunion Tower (the building with the ball on top) during happy hour.

6) White Rock Lake -- Cycle, walk or run around the path around White Rock Lake

7) Dallas Arboretum -- An oasis in the city, near White Rock Lake

8) Dallas World Aquarium -- Not as big or splashy as, say, Atlanta's, but good nonetheless.

9) North Park Mall -- If you like shopping, this is a great place to do it.

10) Uptown -- As mentioned before, take the free trolley through Uptown, bar hopping along the way.

11) Southfork Ranch -- If you are into the old TV show "Dallas," you might find this site of interest.

12) Deep Ellum -- The it's hot/it's not historic area east of downtown seems to be making a comeback with some new bars (Anvil) and old-standbys, especially if you're into indie-rock and the like (All Good Cafe, Prophet Bar, Trees).

13) Bishop Arts District -- In another older neighborhood (Oak Cliff) that used to be the home of Bonnie & Clyde and Lee Harvey Oswald is this small but fun, walkable area full of non-chain restaurants and cool places like chocolatier Dude, Sweet (where you can get free samples of chocolate), phenomenal Mexican food at Veracruz, and great pizza at Eno's.
