Hi. I am relocating to Dallas from NY and I need some advice on the cost of living in Dallas. I am looking to move to Uptown area in Dallas. I will be living on a teacher's salary around $50,000 a year.

1) I am planning on renting an apartment is $900 a month in rent going to leave me with enough money left over to still live my life? Go out an shop, entertainment, etc without living paycheck to paycheck?

2) How much should I expect to pay in utilities including cable/internet?

50K can let you live somewhat comfortably as a small apartment dweller if you are budget conscious. You won't be living the high life. Utilities should run around 250-300 per month with cable and internet. You'll be needing a car.

Are you looking for a 1 or 2 bedroom for $900? If the latter, then that's not going to be possible in Uptown. Even a lot of the 1 bedrooms in Uptown run more than that.

I was also going to comment on the $900 a month. You mentioned a kid in a prior thread, so that sounds like 2 bedrooms. You're probably going to have to look "around" Uptown, and not "in" Uptown.

Maybe something at The Village? It's north of Uptown but not far by car or the DART light rail and there a ton of apartments there. Though, I don't know what it would be like with a kid at The Village, since it seems to be mostly young singles or couples with no kids.

Where will you be teaching? Living in Uptown or the Village will be awful if you're driving to south Irving or McKinney every day...

Cost of Living Wizard | Salary.com

Based on a $50k salary starting in NY, NY:

Quote:
The cost of living in Dallas, TX is 39.3% lower than in New York, NY . Therefore, you would have to earn a salary of $30,329 to maintain your current standard of living.

I don't have a kid (as i mentioned a kid in the other thread). I am thinking about in the future when I do eventually have kids. I am single female with no children, only a dog

It's going to be challenging finding a place for 900.00 in Uptown. You're probably looking at 1400.00-1600.00 for an Uptown pad. Another option is The Village. It's slightly cheaper and still a great area located just to the side of Uptown.
