Anyone have experience with UT Dallas? My daughter is looking at colleges and UTD is close to one of the areas I was interested in relocating to..
Her major is elementary education/photojournalism

I think it depends on what kind of college experience she is looking for. Does UTD offer her majors? I know it is changing, but is historically an "older" campus with lots of professionals who are going back to school. (lots of night classes, not a lot of "campus" feel like you might get at UT-Austin or A&M, etc)

UT Dallas is known for its technology/engineering programs, not for education. And as Jenn says, it is primarily a commuter school.

If she is wanting education, she needs to look at Texas A&M at Commerce. They have a HUGE education program at both undergrad and graduate levels.

Closest may be relative - there are quite a few schools within an hour of UTD - SMU, North Texas, Texas Womens, TCU, UT-Arlington and I am sure a lot more. UT-Commerce is close, but not commutable from north Dallas on a daily basis (IMO)

Good luck with your search.

If you can afford it and your daughter can get in, consider SMU. The Simmons School just completed a beautiful facility.

If your daughter is interested in journalism, UNT has one of the best programs in the region.

A&M Commerce has a campus in Mesquite near Eastfield. I think education majors can take classes there.

I think that the college has been changing in the last 2 to 3 years, I know more and more kids that do go there straight from high school, with the rise of tuition and the fact that UTD doesn't require boarding the first year , it has become a prime choice for many local students wanting to study in the technology field, but like others have said ,it may not be the best college for a major in education .
