Dallas Needs a new airline (to work, road, routes)

Dallas needs another alternative. Especially in light of that darn Wright Ammendment that is stiffling the market on Love Field.

I will be using my remnant AA Miles this spring and never fly them again. I have started flying Spirit and USAirways. I mainly fly to the Caribbean and Miami. I will not be supporting a monopoly!

For the record, few factors if any have played a more significant role in making DFW the massive, successful, and dynamic metropolitan area economically speaking than American Airlines decision decades ago to move it's headquarters and more importantly its largest hub to North Texas. Don't ever stop thanking your lucky stars that Mr Crandall and American management made that decision back in the day.
And get over all of the baloney about the "Soutwest Effect" ! That's history as these days Southwest has a cost-structure which lags most
of the legend airlines and as AMR is now doing have already become "lean & mean" by way of a trip thru Chapter 11. Southwest will gouge you atleast as
often with high-fares as the other carriers.

Monopoly is a very specific economic term. Within this thread so far almost everyone mentioning the term has misused it. AA is simply not a monopoly, not at DFW not anywhere.

More airlines = more competition, = lower fares. In an earlier post I mentioned the Wright Amendment sunsetting in a couple years only in regards to Southwest. But I would imagine if Love Field plays its cards right when their expansion/renovation is complete, they could lure any other truly low-fare carriers going, and put some pressure on pricing in the Metroplex market.

Im afraid it wont work like that.

The Wright Compromise will allow any domestic destination to be served from Love Field which works great for Southwest, American, and United since they are the only airlines that will be allowed to serve Love Field.

How is this possible? Because the as part of the Wright compromise, the maximum gate capacity at Love Field is set at 20. Southwest has 16 of those on lock, American has 2 and United has two. Given that they are at a premium, I highly doubt any of the three will be leasing them away.

Also, expansion of Love Field past 20 gates would be against the law thanks to the compromise. They may end up repealing it one day, but it will be at least 20 years before that happens.

By the way, guess who fought tooth and nail to keep Love capped at 20 gates? Hint; it wasnt American or United.

In the near future southwest will be flying to the Caribbean due to the buying air tran. Its just taking time to merge everything together. Once the wright amendment gets repealed southwest will be even better and bigger than it is right now. Love field is getting renovated in preparation for this. Im lookign forward to using my rapid rewards points for some Caribbean flights.

The Love Field renovation (including a new 20-gate terminal and a connector to DART), is scheduled to be completed as the last of the Wright amendment restrictions end in 2014. That's not a coincidence.

BTW, the end to AA? Delta interested in AMR? If they do go on with this, DFW will suffer big time since Delta will never leave ATL. For the one that mention, its true monopoly is not the right word. However, oligopoly is the right term. Dallas should NEVER rely solely on 1 airline.

Just heard a talking head on the TV. He said the DOJ would never even consider a Delta assumption of AA. Both airlines would have to ditch dozens of routes for it to work. Non-starter.
