I haven't lived in Houston or Austin and I've lived in Dallas now 16 years. I know a lot of people that have located from Houston and Austin. The general feedback was that Houston was way more humid thank Dallas and that was my experience during the few visits we made there. Austin is a college town and is very liberal but also much smaller than the DFW metroplex.

I live in Plano now after 32 years in two stints in Houston. Houston is a great city to work in and has a large upper middle class but fewer uber wealthy like Dallas. The humidity is a difference maker IMO. Summers in both Dallas and Houston arent fit for man nor beast however in fall and spring the humidy in Houston makes me less likely to be outdoors than in DFW. I am very warm natured so the humidity impacts me more than most. I prefer living in Plano/DFW to Houston but believe the Houston economy is stronger in some respects currently...
I have lived back East in Northern NJ suburbs of NYC as well as Pennsylvania and strongly prefer both Houston and Texas to back east. But my roots are here and family as well which makes a difference. There is a nice newness and upbeat vibe in Texas generally like I like a lot. DFW and Houston both are huge and offer most things a large US city should offer... arts in Houston are more stable and well known, Dallas new arts facilities down town are great but the symphony is having budget issues.
