Murphy has some shopping for groceries and basic necessitites. There is a Target and a Sprouts too. Not too far from there (may be 3 miles or so), there is an outdoor mall called Firewheel, actually located in the city of Garland with many restaurants and all other shopping you want.

Rowlett is similar but has more restaurants. It is also 5 minutes from Firewheel mall and abuts to Rockwall where there is a plethora of restaurants and shopping as well.

What is your definition of pure hell? We lived through some really crappy traffic were we are now until they increased the road size from 1 lane to 2.

Not the same as yours. A lot of people in Dallas have no idea how bad traffic can really be. Chicago is in that inner-core of traffic hell along with New York, Atlanta, Miami, DC and San Francisco. If you move here, I can guarantee you that you'll often be amused at how much locals complain about traffic.

As far as the budget, you'll have to figure that out yourself. You'll just have to make sure to add up all of your expected expenses and make sure you have more than enough to cover them. If you can be responsible with money then you can certainly get by somewhere like Richardson or Plano.

75248 just make sure the house is in Richardson ISD. 75248 is actually located in Dallas County, but many neighborhoods are Richardson ISD (which are very good!) Stay away from Dallas ISD!!!! This zip code is less than a two miles from the Richardson city limit. There are tons of very nice homes in Richardson as well. Property taxes run me about 2.25% of appraised value - or 4900 year for 2300 sf house.
