If you're really interested in Lakewood, then you need to get your husband to try out the commute. That will really be the make or break. Have your husband get a hotel somewhere near Lakewood on a weeknight, get up slightly before he'd normally go to work, drive over to Lakewood, and try the commute firsthand. He'll either decide "I can live with that." or "No f'ing way!" That's what I did when I first moved to the DFW area and it really helped me rule out some areas I otherwise liked.

I don't think you will need to worry about the schools or go private. The schools are the best in Dallas from an academic, athletic and extracurricular perspective.
