I'm curious to see the results as well but I think we've pretty much decided on the Rockwall area. They seem to have everything we need close by and not a bad commute to Dallas either.

Brother lives in Wylie, wife's cousins live in Rockwall so I'm familiar with both. The two cities are right next to each other, and a small portion of Wylie is in the Rockwall ISD area. Wylie is better if you work in Plano, Rockwall is better if you work downtown Dallas. Both are newer "boomburgs" and have been growing rapidly. Rockwall has more shopping, and is probably more upscale than Wylie with developments like the Harbor. Wylie is still more rural although like I said, it has been growing rapidly.

For diversity, in my opinion, while both are majority white, there are considerable numbers of minorities there now, and this is a trend that should only continue in the future. I'm black and my wife's family has lived in Rockwall for ten years and love it. My brother moved to Wylie 2 years ago and hasnt experienced any problems whatsoever. For schools, I would take Rockwall over Wylie, but both school districts have been making strides to get better, and both ISDs still rank below the Planos and Allens, but they are perfectly good school districts so have no fear.

Both cities have low crime, it should not be a factor in your decision, at least no more than anywhere else.
So in a nutshell, if you want a more rural, quiter setting, then Wylie would be the place. If you want more urban with greater selection in amenities like shopping and entertainment, then Rockwall is the spot for you.

biafra4life is spot on in my opinion - I live in Wylie and it is great, but i am familiar with Rockwall and it is nice as well so you really can't go wrong either way!

Thanks, they both sound like great places to live. Now i guess we will make a decision based on the price of a home. Thanks for the input and opinions!

Your money will go a lot further in Wylie. There are some GREAT deals out there. My wife and I are potentially looking to buy a home this year, and we are targeting the Rowlett/Sachse/Wylie area, and Wylie wins on price hands down, with Rowlett behind that. Rockwall tends to have older/smaller homes for the same price. The only negative with Wylie would be commute. Unless you work in Plano or Garland, you are pretty much sealed into a long commute. That being said, my brother lives in Wylie and works at the American Airlines center in downtown Dallas, he drives to Garland and catches the train. Works for him.

If you want the best internet access (and also good TV/internet deals), Wylie is the hands down choice. A very very small area of Rockwall has FIOS, while all of Wylie has FIOS. FIOS was our #1 priority, so we never really considered Rockwall, although both my wife and I like Rockwall a lot. FIOS is the only local provider of Fiber to the Premises Internet. U-verse is only fiber to the node, and then copper last mile. FIOS has the best speeds around (up AND down), no bandwidth cap, and (See below), ridiculously awesome pricing. Plus it NEVER goes down.

I love paying literally $46.64/month [exactly what I am charged] for 25 up/25 down internet (FIOS) in Wylie, no contract, and as I said before, no bandwidth cap. Wouldn't want to give that up for anything in the world.

I'm guessing if I was in Rockwall I'd be paying a lot more for much worse service. Maybe that doesn't matter to you (or anyone else here), but if it does, Wylie wins out. Both overall, you can't go wrong with Wylie or Rockwall.

P.S.: I do DirecTV for my tv service, but most people in Wylie do FIOS for both internet and TV and you get REALLY good deals. You end up paying under $100/month for internet (See above for how awesome it is) and a boatload of TV channels. And again, with FIOS, that internet and TV never goes down, don't have to worry about rain fade knocking out the TV signal.

OK I have to ask...do you work for Verizon? I've seen you constantly hawking the FIOS access...Maybe I'm just weird, but when I'm deciding where to move to, I'm focusing on safety, schools, commute...those things, internet access is way down the list...actually I take that back, it's a non factor. As long as there is service to the area then I'll take it. But hey, to each his/her own.
