Funny how all the regular Dallas HS's are a lot larger (compared to NoVA HS's), but the science magnet is only 15% size of the NoVA magnet. Smaller is better - bigger is better???
Well...I don't know what to tell you. Different school districts do things differently. As different schools do things differently....even public schools within the same district.

Just curious, how big are the NoVa high schools? Other than Skyline, the DISD high schools are pretty small, at least for this area. The majority are 4A and the average school size is 1560. Excluding Skyline (outlier at 3X average population), the average is 1391 students or roughly 350-400 students/ grade (more in the lower grades & less in the upper grades).

5A Schools:
Dallas Skyline 4765
Dallas Sunset 2369
Dallas White 2257
Dallas Samuell 2075

I misspoke (or mis-typed), I was thinking Metroplex and typed Dallas (I suppose I should just use DFW as a catch-all).

But to tell the truth, I really am pleasantly surprised about the size of the high schools in Dallas. Much more comparible to others nationally. Also, these sizes are more similar to the schools in Atlanta and Seattle (only other places I've lived besides MD - which has even smaller HS's).

Loudon County (Which is more like Collin County - surburbia)
Stone Bridge 1,917
Freedom 1,816
Broad Run 1,683
Briar Woods 1,600
Potomac Falls 1,504
Loudoun County 1,411
Loudoun Valley 1,338
Dominion 1,335
Heritage 1,327
Park View 1,327
Woodgrove 1,104
Tuscarora 1,097

Fairfax County (more city)

Annandale High School 3032.00
Robinson Secondary School 2904.00
Chantilly High School 2868.00
Lake Braddock Secondary School 2777.00

Oakton High School 2440.00
West Springfield High School 2409.00
South Lakes High School 2296.00

Can I ask where you found these numbers? I have this chart for Hillcrest (pg 44) that has their average white SAT score at 1141. Which would have them at 51st between RL Turner and Lake Highlands.

Just for a point of comparison on the strength of the DFW real estate value proposition, it's interesting to compare these scores to those of schools in a certain coastal megastate, as compiled by the Los Angeles Times.

Top Average SAT Scores - California Schools Guide - Los Angeles Times

The scores aren't broken down by ethnicity or participation rate, although it does tell you the ethnic mix at each school. The overall listing gives the three-part total, but if you click on each school, you can find the reading and math scores and sum them.

In Palo Alto, a Silicon Valley town:

Palo Alto High (58% white, 23% Asian, 6% free lunch): 1307 SAT overall
Henry M Gunn High (47% white, 39% Asian, 8% free lunch): 1306 SAT overall

The cheapest 3/2 in Palo Alto (as opposed to East Palo Alto, the next-door low-income enclave), 520 Barron Ave, can be had for a mere $1.05M, or about $820 per sq ft.

And as for magnets:

Lowell High, San Francisco (70% Asian, 40% free lunch): 1227
Whitney High, Cerritos (82% Asian, 17% free lunch): 1336

Conclusion: you pay a lot of money to live in the mild Mediterranean climate of coastal California, and the schools are not that different at the very top end.

I'm surprised that our magnets are considered competitive with the elite NYC and NoVa magnets, but I do NOT agree that the top students at our magnets would be considered middle of the pack our top publics, never mind the middle tier of publics. What are you basing your analysis on?

Incidentally, I think it would be fun to see what would happen if we had a regional magnet akin to the size of the pool that NYC and NoVa can pick from, drawing from all over Dallas. THEN I think you would see a Dallas-area magnet that would be the equal of any coastal one.

Line # - SAT average - demographic - school (district ISD)

1) 1403 - W - Science/Engineering magnet (Dallas)
2) 1367 - W - Talented/Gifted magnet (Dallas)

3) 1323 - Asian - Science/Engineering magnet (Dallas)
4) 1315 - Asian - Highland Park (Highland Park)
5) 1310 - Mix - Highland Park (Highland Park)

6) 1282 - Asian - Senior (Plano)
7) 1271 - Asian - West (Plano)
8) 1267 - Asian - Carroll (Southlake Carroll)
9) 1265 - Mix - West (Plano)
10) 1252 - Asian - FM Marcus (Lewisville)
11) 1248 - Hisp - Talented/Gifted magnet (Dallas)
