We are considering retiring to the area but I am not sure about it . My husband loves the price but I don't seem to feel as excited as I should. We have found a great track of land! 3 acres and a home for a great price but something is holding me back. What can you all tell me about the area that would help me make a good decision. We don't fish much so the lake is not a selling point. We want to garden have a horse and just enjoy the quiet country life. Thanks for any info.

If all you are looking to do is relax at the lake, you will enjoy it. But if you are looking for a decent restaurant (aside from Sonic), any type of shopping besides Walmart, etc. then you will be driving in to Rockwall or Greeenville. Quinlan and Tawakoni are very working-class towns. This brings their share of problems: there is a significant drug problem, petty crime, etc. There is no decent hospital unless you drive to Rockwall, so keep that in mind.

But Tawakoni is a nice lake, and it is not usually as crowded as the lakes that are closer to DFW such as Ray Hubbard.

ChristieP is spot on. West Tawakoni and Quinlan are small towns with little industry. Walmarts are the social centers of town. Petty crime and meth use is also a problem common in small towns. Lake Tawakoni is my favorite fishing lake in the area. If you simply want a quiet life with down home folks you will enjoy the area. If going to nice restaurants and shopping is your thing the area will not fit the bill.

They have a reputation for being the district that has the kids who have been kicked out of DISD and other suburban districts - therefore much bigger problems with troubled youth than most places.

Default to move there or not???

Schools are not a consideration for us as our kids are grown. Our grandchildren would visit during the summer. I am mostly concerned about the crime and am wondering if I would feel safe there. Are there robberies very often and what about shootings or is it just burglaries and petty theft? I guess I can get a gun like the people across the street from the property. They even have a sign warning people hmmm now that makes me wonder. I know I should ask them about the area but they don't seem too friendly.....Yet??? What is the closest shopping area? One that has Target Michaels Old Navy type stores? Also what town nearby has good Antique Shops. Oh and furniture and appliances any suggestions for local stores or info on towns nearby with such stores. Thanks for any info.

Are there any gangs out there? Or just troubled kids?

Rockwall is the nearest town with those stores. It's about 30 minutes away via a 2-lane state highway. Quinlan does have a nice Brookshires grocery store. For appliances and furniture, you would probably be driving to Mesquite, which is an hour away. Many of the little towns nearby have antique stores. That's not uncommon in east Texas.

As for crime, it's really just a lot of rednecks out there. If you leave valuable stuff out (such as tools) they will dissappear. Break ins and theft are not uncommon due to the drug problems. My father had a pickup truck and tools stolen out of his driveway (about 10 miles from Quinlan). Most people in the area own a firearm for protection, both from people and from animals/snakes. No gangs that I'm aware of...it's not urban, just rednecks.

The crime they have is mostly petty thief. Basically just use common sense and you will be fine. Most of the homes in that area are located in small sub divisions and everyone looks out for everyone. Lake Tawakoni has a forum that should be helpfull to you. You can find it doing a simple google search.

A buddy of mine has a lakehouse out there. I like to visit but I wouldn't want to live out there. It seemed VERY redneck. Tons of people living in run down trailer homes/campers. I guess if your main hobbies involve lake related stuff (and long trips in the car to do anything else) it would be a good place to retire. My friend also told me that Meth and petty crime are the biggest issues out there. However, the folks I ran into and his neighbors all seemed very friendly. Its the type of place where you could name every family on the block.
