Default DFW Area Lands a US Patent Office

It's still unknown where in the Metroplex the office will be located.

Quote:
Acting U.S. Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank hopped on the phone with reporters to discuss the decision. Said she, the selection process was “highly competitive,” which means “the people of the Dallas area should be proud” of today’s breaking news. Said Blank, Dallas-ish was chosen because the area has a “vibrant university and research community, a talented pool of workers and strong business community.”

“Exceedingly rich in engineering talent, patent applicants, and patent grants,” Dallas area lands US Patent office | The Scoop Blog
This pretty significant news for the area. I imagine having a Patent Office in the backyard may be a deciding factor for start-ups and other companies to locate offices here.

Other cities chosen for Patent Offices where; Detroit, Denver and San Jose.

Logic would dictate that your opinion is probably right - that was my first thought on reading this news. But I'm not a businessman or know much about that sort of thing (getting patents, the difference that proximity to a patent office would mean, etc).

I read somewhere that the general public will be able to schedule appointments to meet with Patent office reps.

And it's cool that Detroit got one. That city needs a break.

I guess they wanted a new office in each time zone with Detroit for the East, Dallas-Fort Worth for Central, Denver for Mountain, and Silicon Valley for the West Coast? If that was the case, then Dallas-Fort Worth beat out Chicago, Austin, and Houston, the only other major cities I can think of that might have been good candidates.

Makes sense

DFW/Hou/OKC are where world's o&g innovation is based esp in shale

SV is where world's tech hw/sw innovation resides

Not sure what other parts of US have produced any notable innovation in past 25yrs (MSFT is 30yo; AMZN is 15+yo; what else of value has Seatt created?) And what innovation has Aus ever produced? (DELL wasn't known for innovation even decades ago; now it's just a dying munchkin boxmaker)

Amused by the Detroit locale for a patent office....Moderator cut: see comment....nearly any wealthy engineer in SV or TX drives around in some Mercedes....doubt anyone w/a 3-dig IQ who cares abt own personal safety, driving pleasure, etc has chosen to drive a US (or Asian) engineered/built car in decades

Market tends to vote with own dollars by buying products that truly deliver value and innovation to customer, no matter what community organizers or unions or patent office or local-yokel crony capitalist cos. may claim...

I don't know if that's universally true, especially regarding Asian cars. I know some of the more outdoorsy engineer types have Subarus and 4-Runners and the like -- perhaps in addition to a Mercedes. And I would guess that would be even more the case in some place like Northern California or Denver.

You aren't joking.

San Jose and San Francisco combined have produced more patents than NYC, LA and Boston combined.

Patents 2006-10:

Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX - 9,316

San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA - 40,446

Patenting In Technology Classes, Breakout By U.S. Metropolitan Area (Class ALL, ALL CLASSES), CY 2006 - 2010 Utility Patent Grants Distributed By Year of Grant

Interesting list. So Austin does actually beat out DFW in total number of patents.
