Folks...I am relocating from NC to Plano and looks like car insurance rates are much higher. Both me and the wife have had 2 accidents in the past 5 years. Both of did not have other cars or injuries involved but I am being killed by the insurance rates that I am being quotes.
I am paying $500 for 2 cars in NC currently and I am being quoted around $1750 in TX. More than triple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are their companies that are better with rates in TX or is everyone out there in the same ball park?

google for an independent insurance agent and see what s/he can find for you
you can increase your deductable which will lower your rates but also mean that casual damage comes out of your pocket

thank the TX legislature and its strong relationship with the insurance lobby
thank Rick Perry who put a new head on the insurance board who seems less intersted than past ones about creating a voice for the Tx resident vs corporate interests

and be prepared to pay more for home insurance if you buy a house for the same reasons

For starters, you can check the comparisons here on the Texas Help Insure.com site for examples of auto rates/policies.

I'm in the process of comparing car insurance rate quotes right now in the Plano area too. FWIW, I'm finding that Geico is a lot cheaper for insurance that far exceeds the TX minimum requirements even. I've asked around to friends and family and looked at reviews online and Geico seems to be reputable. In the past I had State Farm (Carolina guy here too) but am thinking of going with Geico because of their competitive rates and relatively reliable reviews.

That is what I am seeing too. Although TX rates are higher than Carolina for sure, Geico seems better than some of the quotes I am getting. It's online quotes though valid only for 6 months. I'm afraid it may be a bait and switch where they will jack the rates on you in 6 months after a real underwriter has taken a look at the policy.....I hope I am wrong.

Be sure that the Company pays their claims. A lot of them who advertise low rates are not noted for paying well. My son got burned by one that advertises very heavy on TV.

And if you are eligible for USAA, they aree awesome. Hubby and I have used them for almost 20 years and we'd never consider switching!

Obviously USAA is the best, but they are for military members / veterans only, right? If possible, I'd try state farm.

We have had Geico for years and they've never messed with our rates. However, we've also never had to file a claim (knock on wood).

Seems like all insurance rates are based on 6-month terms. So I wouldn't let that scare you.
