I need to register my car in TX and just realized that I need to have it inspected in order to get my tags. Does anyone know of any cheap places to get this done. I am coming from a state that does not require inspections so I have no idea how much it should cost. Thanks

The inspection is a set price , it doesn't matter where you do it . I think it is around $39.

You need to get it done in the county where you live and will register the car. Each county is a different price, but it's set in each so no comparing.

There are some places that do things like $5 off, free car wash with inspection, etc. (at least here in Collin County).

you really want a place with will do an honest inspection--especially when they see the out of state sticker--and not try to stick you with repairs that aren't necessary

It's not exactly a set price, as some shops will charge an extra buck or two on top of the inspection fee. You can go to any inspection station as well, it doesn't have to be in the county you live in. It'll be $40 to $50, I just got mine done today in McKinney, cost $40.75.

Dallas County requires both a Safety inspection and Emmissions testing...it's all done at the same time and runs $39. This takes about 15 minutes. Now some counties out away from larger cities only require a safety inspection which runs about $12...but your vehicle much be registered in that county.

Anyhow, you can generally find an inspection only place around the corner. All you have to do is look for a blue Texas shaped inspection sign posted outside a shop. There is one almost next door to Campizzis on Mockingbird (east of 75) if that helps.

"You can go to any inspection station as well, it doesn't have to be in the county you live in."

This is not true. The car needs to be inspected in the county you live in. We once tried to get my wifes car inspected in Greenville, TX and they said we had to have it down in Dallas county.

You can get it done at Valvoline Oil Change places. Maybe a $5 coupon off the price. I don't think you will find a shop willing to get fined, but then again...
