You might want to consider the metro, DART. There's commuter trains that are pretty dependable.

I think the answer depends on whether you want to buy a house?rent property?how much you willing to spend etc. The closer you move toward downtown, unless its a shady area, prepare to pay a lot more for your property. Not to mention that association costs easily run into several hundred dollars a month in several areas.

Dallas is very diverse, some areas more so than others. Rowlett is pretty popular among middle class and upper middle class blacks. It's more of a commuter suburb, mainly homes and shopping. The commute to downtown could be a pain.

Garland and Richardson are both very diverse and have easy access to freeways making is easy to get just about anywhere. Both have good community arts programs.
