Default moving to dallas

readers,

My wife and I are planning to move to the DFW area next spring summer and want some advice on places to live. We are from Washington-Baltimore area and not very familiar with Big D. We will work downtown and looking for something in or very close to the city. We are not opposed to close burbs with things to do. We are young, no kids yet and like culture. I read Atlanta-bound's thread and at the risk of rubbing anybody wrong, I will say that we are black. I mention it b/c we don't want to be the only ones.

Welcome to Big D!

Uptown sounds like it might be a good fit for you...very close-in to downtown and the entertainment districts.

dallasite do you mind giving me some real commute times around the city? I'm hearing all kind of quotes. Say from Richardson, Plano, N. Dallas, Irving to downtown at rush hour

Since the entire state of Texas has less than 12% blacks and Dallas County has almost 21%, I would say it would be a great place to live for you so "you are not the only ones."

The average commute from Richardson to Dallas is about 30 minutes, on a good day. The time in which you have to be to work will pay a huge part in your commute. Driving down 75 or 635 is not a picnic on any day. Plano is a different beast because of size and what part of Plano you live in. Taking the North Dallas Tollway I think your commute is somewhere between 35-45 minutes depending on traffic volume and construction. Coming from North Dallas you may be able to use side streets and avoid most of the major highway traffic.

North Dallas isn't too bad, but FAR North Dallas can be pretty icky....Plano too, but the Dart light rail runs alongside Central so you could always take that. Richardson...depends on how far north you are, and all of it depends on how early/late you leave.

I don't know how bad Irving is now, but when I lived there almost 10 years ago it was pretty horrendous.

The problem is that if anything goes wrong, you will probably be late - so you have to build in 30 or so minutes extra. That uncertainty is also quite stressful. That's one reason I enjoy living close in - I can be anywhere I'd like to go in 5-10 minutes.

Far North Dallas (Coit and Campbell) to downtown Dallas can be anywhere from 30-90 minutes on 75. You just never know how long it will be as you strike out on your journey.
