Hey guys,

I posted a while back about looking for homes in Richardson. My husband and I just bought a fixer-upper in Duck Creek and we LOVE it! We are now interested in finding a Christian church to meet like-minded people and get involved in our new community. We are looking for a place that is diverse and non-judgmental, liberal enough without being all post-modern "God is whoever you want Him to be." My husband is a recent (hispanic) immigrant to this country so a church with other immigrants would be great (from all different countries, not just hispanic ones). We really want a place that is involved in reaching out to our area and around the world. We love that there are so many different cultures here in Richardson. There has to be a church that is representative of the community. Anybody know of anything?

Thank you!

What type of church are you coming from? Might be able to help if I had an idea of what you are used to. When you use the term "liberal" in asking about churches, that can run a huge gamut of types of churches as there is quite a huge gap in people's definition of liberal when applied to churches. Are you used to a denomination or non? Small, medium, large or mega? Contemporary or traditional worship? Evangelical? Charismatic? Mainline?

I would think all churches in Richardson would be, in their own way, representative of the community. But communities can diverge distinctly over how the express themselves in worship, so a little more detail would help us help you.

We went to a Unitarian Church in Richardson when I was a kid. I don't know if it's still there but that's my definition of a "liberal" church.

Where is Duck Creek in Richardson. I grew up there but don't remember what part of town that is in.

I hate it when I hear anything with liberal in it. It means bad things however you cut it. My church has a Spanish ministry that is a strong Biblical church. Prestonwood is located in Plano, and there Spanish service is Sundays at 1:30PM. One of my best friends is one of the pastors on staff. He and his group just left on a Mission Trip to San Antonio today, so they are active in spreading the good news.

But the word doesn't have to be a bad word. A church that loves liberally is a wonderful thing. It can mean so many things in politics and then take on a totally different meaning in religious circles. The SBC has fractured along liberal/fundamentlist lines... at least within an SBC mindset of the term. The liberals are still probably very conservative to other churches/denominations.

I attended Irving Bible Church before moving to Richardson. Before that I attended a Baptist church. I attended Dallas Theological Seminary after graduating from college and quickly found that it was not where I wanted to be. The president of the seminary publicly left our church when they decided to let a woman (who graduated from the seminary!) preach on a Sunday. I had so many experiences at that seminary that left me feeling so resentful. I am just looking for a place that is more concerned about reaching out and not just being right about things that do not even seem important. I have been looking at church websites and was intrigued by the United Methodist Church. I have never been to a Methodist church and do not know any Methodists, but they seem like they might be more like what I am looking for. I know liberal can mean a lot of things, I just meant I'm looking for a place that is not rigid or judgmental. Does that help at all?

Duck Creek is in East Richardson, between Jupiter and Beltline, Plano Rd and Arapaho.

First Baptist Richardson is part of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the group of Southern Baptists that are more liberal as far as women deacons, women in the pulpit, etc. You might find that mix of conservative expository preaching without the legalistic entanglements that come with the territory more to your liking... somewhat the same flavor as your past churches.. less legalistic.
