Default Good/bad inexpensive Dallas neighborhoods for single person?

Hi!

I'm a single female, no kids. I'll be living in Dallas for two months and plan to try to find a short-term roommate/shared house on craigslist. I'll be working downtown (near Reunion Tower and City Hall).

I am looking for a safe yet inexpensive area, as my income is low. I could pay roughly 300-600 per month for a room. I'm okay with a little bit of sketch, but don't want to fear for my life when walking back from my car after work at midnight. I love lively unique neighborhoods full of character (although the most important thing is low cost). I'm 32 but feel fine around people of all ages.

I saw some recommendations for Uptown and North Oak Lawn on this forum. Which other areas might be good to check out? Which areas should I avoid?

Thanks!

I would recommend the Village apartments off of Lovers Lane. Downtown is about six miles from this location. You may be able to find someone willing to have a roommate for a short term.

I would honestly check that couch surfing website or see if you can find a monthly hotel rental for $600/mo. There are a lot of extended stay hotels in the Dallas area. Also check priceline.

The Sterling Hotel has an extended stay plan that sounds ok. They are in a borderline area but I would feel ok there.

Check also in 75206 and 75214. That's East Dallas (Lakewood, Lower Greenville, Henderson) There are many small older garden apartment buildings plus duplexes, four to eight-plexes etc. Also some houses have guest/servant's quarters/garage apartments. You may have to do quite a bit of searching but these lower cost great situations do exist.

It may or may not be what you need, in terms of level of sketchiness, but in terms of short commute and good price, you might want to consider a share or sublet in one of the apartments just over the river in Oak Cliff, near Methodist hospital (75203), i.e. Zang Triangle.

It's a mere 1.5 miles from Reunion Tower over the beautiful Houston / Jefferson viaducts -- you wouldn't have to get on the freeway and could even bike to work. Another mile to the Bishop Arts District (75208).

It is, however, arguably a more "borderline" area than i.e. The Village.

Good luck!
