I don't know anything about Seattle but the Dallas/Fort Worth area has plenty of job opportunities and housing. As a matter of fact, several police depts here are pushing for new recruits. I worked with a girl and her husband last year who moved from CA and he was just out of the academy in CA and was hired on in one of the suburbs of Dallas, don't remember which one now, Grand Prairie maybe. But she told me that he didn't have a very good experience going for his interviews with the Dallas police dept. They asked him questions that as a new recruit he didn't have any knowledge or experience in how to answer and they knew that. I can't remember what else she said. I never met her husband, this is only what she told me. My point is, her husband didn't let this defeat his spirit and he applied at other cities.

This will be a great place for you to raise some little Texans!

Depends on your point of view. If you have liberal values and want to raise your family in that vein, move to Seattle. If you have a more traditional outlook, you'd like Texas. LOL, I just read some really scary (from a conservative POV) stuff about Calif. schools and said a prayer of thanksgiving that we live in Texas!

I think I read the same stuff you did! Scary, indeed! Thank God we don't live there!

Like everyone else has said, I think your political ideology really is an important factor. I'm about as far left as one can be without considering themselves a socialist, and I live in Dallas. I find myself getting in a lot of heated debates with people, to say the least. We'll be doing a flip-flop if you do move to Texas, because I'll be moving out to Los Angeles next summer with my boyfriend. (:

A friend I went to school with recently moved outside of Seattle due to her husbands job transfer and she says it is pretty expensive there plus it rains a lot. My wife and I have a 4 year old daughter and live in Forney which is a great community with affordable prices and good schools. Our neighbors moved from northern CA just this year and they love it here and could not believe how much home they could afford to buy! The entire DFW area also offers a lot of job opportunities.

I've lived in Seattle.

Seattle:
Housing in Seattle is expensive. Seattle and Portland are both doing well economicly and aren't hurt by the slow real estate market as some areas.

If you are really into outdoor hiking, biking climbing etc the PacNW is great. But you will also have to get used to the weather...The old saying is that People in seattle endure 8mo and enjoy 4mo. You will expirence all weather conditions in a single day. I've been biking in sunny weather that clouded up and had sleet then snow and then back to warm sunshine! You get used to hiking etc...in the drizzle.

When it's a clear day and you can see Mt Rainer...it's simply Breathtaking. During the summer There are aprox 10 weeks of absoultely outstanding weather. plus it stays light until around 10pm. So the winter/fall time ther is alot of rain (more soft drizzle overcast stuff) and it gets dark very early in the winter so your outdoor time is limited.

YOu have fantastic geography...Mountians close, whitewater rafting close, Ocean close, Rain forrest close (Olympic penn) Skiing close, and close to Vancouver BC etc...

People either love it or hate it. not too many are on the fence saying oh it's ok.

Dallas area:

Housing is VERY afforadable. Amazingly so. Lots of jobs avail but the pay won't be as good as other areas. School for the most part are very good and crime for the most part is realitivly low.

Weather can be extreme from one day to the next (due to the storms blowing in from the plains regions off of the Rocky's) Ice more than snow... But you will get some fanastic weather in the fall and the spring. You can golf year round, bike year round etc... Summers are HOT. winter are pretty mild.

No mountians near or old growth rain forests no ocean nearby. but lots of lakes.

I personally didn't choose to move back to that area. I hated the winters (Give me 3 feet of snow any day over the constant rain) The limited ammount of sun & daylight were fine to deal with for 1 year...but forever?? no, not for me. BUT....I LOVED the summers JULY and August can be matched!

hope this helps......

Default Richardson, Plano or Frisco

If your moving to DFW, it’s hard to go wrong with any of the cities on the north side of Dallas. Richardson has a great school district. Plano, Allen and Frisco are rapidly growing have affordable housing and good job opportunities.

Nursing in the Dallas area is in high demand. I have a friend who is an emergency room nurse and they are crying for nurses in all areas of nursing according to her. As for police officers... I have several co-hearts that are teachers and they are married to police recruits. I think many of the departments are looking for officers whether it is Dallas or a suburb of Dallas. Goodluck with your decision on where to move.

Seattle and Dallas are very different. Both offer quality lifestyles. I have to agree with others it is a matter of what you are wanting overall. Weather, cost of housing, etc.

My wife and I moved to Dallas from L.A. and we like it here alot. I think Seattle is a great city to visit, but the weather and cost of living stinks. Houston doesn't do anything for me, it's more humid than Dallas and I don't think the city has much character. Dallas is a nice fit for us. The worst thing about it is the summertime heat, but we dealt with it. As I advise everyone who posts general questions like this, you really have to come out and see it for yourself. Only you and your hubby know what you guys want. What works for me may not work for you.

As far as nursing, I worked as a nurse recruiter in California. I will tell you nursing wages are much lower here in Dallas. But I imagine that between a cop's and a nurse's salary together, you guys should be earning in the neighborhood of $100k and that is enough to live very comfortably here.
