I'm mixed race, and to be honest ... Racism exists everywhere. I hate to say it, but I honestly believe in general there is less racism here in the USA than most places in the world. Diversity doesn't ensure acceptance, as it could just mean that members of groups X, Y, and Z, will only hang out with other members of their respective groups. The kids aren't born racist, they are taught to be that way. Definitely lots of Asian groups will tell their kids not to hang out with such-and-such kid because of their race. The best thing your son can do to minimize racism is to be excellent at whatever he does. Yes, some people will be resentful, but if he makes a positive name for himself, be it in academics, sports, etc., it will gain positive attention and related friendships because people always want to associate with success.

I'm always amazed how there are so many people "from the same tiny dot" dispersed across the world. Good to know that your middle schoolers are thriving in Coppell. Thanks for the tip!

I know you're right, that racism is everywhere. And I do realize that I can't shield my kids from it. You are also right to say that I just need to build up his (and my other kids') confidence and self-esteem so that they know how to deal with someone who may be more narrow-minded.

Thank you to everyone for all of the advice and suggestions. I will definitely look into Coppell and Plano and a few other places that you all suggested. What has struck me from reading some other forums and from responses to this post is how positive everyone is about living in the Dallas area. I have to say I was a bit skeptical and anxious when my husband mentioned Dallas, but now I'm feeling a lot more upbeat about it. Thanks again!
