There are a lot of low to mid rise apartment buildings in the area, most of which are under five stories. In fact I believe Pasadena has a building height limit of about five stories max. So the town does not have a big city feel. You can hop on a Metro Gold Line train and be in Downtown LA in about 30 minutes for a more urban feel and more options for entertainment.

From Old Pasadena, the Arroyo Seco Park is nearby for hiking and running. Many residents walk and hike around the Rose Bowl. A few miles drive will get you access to the San Gabriel Mountains/Angeles National Forest for more hiking and mountain biking.

There is a mixed use development on Colorado called Paseo Colorado. Retail and restaurants with apartments and lofts above. It is very comparable to uptown. Before I had kids I worked for Post properties and lived and worked in uptown, then moved to Pasadena where they opened Paseo Colorado back in 2002. You will love Pasadena, just don't commute, it's awful!

I think the closest thing to West Village is The Americana, just south of Pasadena in the city of Glendale. It has a faux downtown/main street setting with ground floor retail and apartments and condos above.
