Hi guys,
New to Dallas. I've lived in the deep South (AL, MS, SC, GA) where fire ants were common. This morning, had my dogs in the park, and saw a strange dirt mound, pulled on the leash so my dogs would not run through it. The mound looked sort of like what I consider a fire ant mound, but then again, it didn't. Are fire ants in the DFW area?

OK. Thanks. Good to know. I guess the soil color threw me off. I'm used to fire ant mounds being a red-ish color. These mounts were just brown.

The mounds are just about the color of the dirt under ground. Some are redder than others and some are browner than others. Fire ants ALL over the place. You'll very rarely see regular black ants.

Life's hierarchy of needs around here:
1. Good AC in ones car and home
2. Amdro or Ortho or similar for killing fire ants
3. Mapping software of some sort
4. Only then food and water

Around here, fire ants have fairly easy to control. Argentine ants have almost driven them completely out. And they are really TOUGH to control. Haven't found anything that works well yet.

The newest pests are "crazy ants". They are smaller than fire ants. You'll see them on your driveway or sidewalk. They are very fast and run back and forth in lines. I was installing a deck at a neighbors house and unbeknownst to me they crawled all over me. Had the worst allergic attack on my arms.
Now fire ants, when they bite you, you know it fast. Nothing like that pain, except loosing a divorce fight.

There just don't seem to be as many fire ants around East Dallas as 15-20 years ago. Anyone else notice fewer mounds in your area?
