How does Vines compare to Jasper? I see the numbers but I am curious if the kids' experience will be significantly different in the Wells/Haggard/Vines/Plano Sr track versus the Haun/Robinson/Jasper/Plano West track. I don't want to have my kids be on a "just ok" track, I want them to be on a "great/exemplary" track. That said, the Rice/Jasper/Plano West combo is unappealing as I think it's just too overly competitive for my kids. I still want my kids to have a normal average childhood.
Thanks.

You are contradicting yourself. To be great/exemplary you have to compete among the best, being head frog in your well wouldn't mean much in outside world. However these are all good schools and have regular/honors/PACE streams to accommodate all levels.

Jasper is more competitive no doubt. The administration over there forced some of the teachers to make some of the honors/AP classes a bit less challenging (a mistake, in my opinion), but it still has a competitive student body). I think that this is a good thing though - it can drive you to succeed.

Vines isn't bad, but it isn't stellar. If you want to avoid Jasper, I would look at Clark High School instead (specifically areas feeding to Schimelphenig and Hendrick Middle Schools). It's a stronger school than Vines, but isn't as competitive as Jasper. You could also consider Shepton, but you would end up being with the Jasper kids anyway when you reached Plano West.

Wells and Haggard are both great schools. Vines? Eh. It has good and bad points. The band, drama, and speech programs are better than Jasper's, and the orchestra is almost as good. Jasper's debate team is far stronger, and it fields strong teams in academic competitions that Vines doesn't even bother to compete in. Both schools' athletic teams are weak compared to Shepton or Clark.

There will definitely be a far larger pool of high-performing kids at Jasper. For example, about 100 freshmen at Vines take Human Geography AP, vs. probably 250-300 at Jasper. But there is still a critical mass of brainiacs around at Vines.

Thanks all. This is exactly the feedback I was hoping for....what you cannot get in just reading the numbers. So Vines appears not to be a good fit for my us. Could you please compare with Robinson/Jasper/Plano West the following tracks:

Schimelpfenig/Clark/Plano Senior
Frankford/Shepton/Plano West

Our first choice is Robinson/Jasper/Plano West, but we are finding it difficult to find a house and need a backup plan. Some houses we like have been in these two feeder tracks. Which of the two would be closest academically to Robinson/Jasper/PW? My kids really aren't much into sports; they much prefer to ride bikes and shoot non-competitive hoops.
Thank you again!

I think Frankford is pretty underwhelming - others may differ. I live in a neighborhood feeding there. I've seen multiple " failure" stories, and a fair number of folks transfer their kids to Robinson.

Schimelpfenig has a " hidden" option of Jasper/ Plano Senior which a lot of academically-oriented people elected to use this past year.

Big G, aside from Robinson/Jasper/PW and Rice/Jasper/PW, are there any other comparable feeder tracks for me to consider?

Mostly, realize that it's not uncommon to transfer in or out of schools, even more so with the new optional academy structure. So you could buy that house feeding to Wells/Haggard, benefit from the small yet challenging K-8 sequence, then switch to IB or the PISD Academy for 9-12.

Nothing is comparable to Rice, but there are a lot of strong K-8 combos. Some other middle schools to consider: Schimelpfenig, Haggard, Hendrick, Murphy, Otto.

At the risk of offending, there are only 2 flat-out "avoid" middle schools: Armstrong and Carpenter.

Your price point would work well with the 1990s portions of the Hightower and Saigling areas, west of Coit, south of Parker. Also, anywhere in Hendrick or Schimelpfenig.
