Yes, we swim in it. We also boat and ride our SeaDoo's in it. There are gators in all the lakes around here. They naturally make their way up and can be found every now and then. Not a common sight though. I've never seen one but a neighbor killed one that was about 6' that had come up out of the water and was making its way up towards our house there.

Tawakoni is not your 'resort' type lake by any means, but if you are looking for 'rustic', it might be to your liking. We've spent some time there and it's a little scary to me even tho I'm a country girl...not scared of the critters, but the type people who seem to hang out there on weekends. Don't mind it in the daytime, but I'm ready to go home when the sun goes down.

There are not many "resort type" lakes in the Dallas area or w/in a few hours drive. Possum Kingdom is probably the closest. As for the types of people that can be said of all lake communities in most of North, East and Central Texas. The areas lakes were put in were not highly desireable and were out away from most commercial growth for higher paying jobs. Even at Cedar Creek Lake it is not uncommon to find a nice high dollar lake house across the street from a rundown trailer that someone still lives in. I've been to many a lake in Texas and it really is no different unless your willing to spend the $$$$$$ and even those lakes have the "other side" of the lake that is not as "desireable". I've spent many a night down at Tawakoni and have yet to have a single problem. My inlaws live down there now by the lake and she drives a new Cadillac so there are plenty of normal, everyday people living there just like anywhere else.

There were once pockets of trailers at Texoma, but they increasingly harder to find. Anyone who bought property there over the last 10-20-30 years is very happy with their investment now. I would expect as Dallas gains a couple more million in the next decade lake properties will continue to increase in value.

My family moved out to the area when I was a child to get away from the city. Like anywhere else these days, there are places that you want to stay away from at night. But there are some nice areas too. The lakefront community that I live in is mostly older people and is very quiet and nice. We bought a house by my in-laws who have lived there for about 15 years and have never had a problem. I grew up on the south side of the lake and my mother has lived in that house for 25 years without any problems. There are some meth issues in the area and a new thing that has come up over the last couple of years are the game rooms that are full at all hours. Those are a couple of things that I don't like, but for the most part this is a nice area. There is also a state park that is newer (built in last 5-10 years). The house prices are nice too, we got our house for cheap when the lake was low.

Akwart -- are you looking to buy this property as your primary residence or as a second home?

Hubby and I went to look at land for sale once about 2 miles away from the lake. One trailer was burned at one point and shrinkwrapped and actually had people living in there. Another trailer was duct taped so it would stay together. The rest of the area was not much better. There was actually a Rotweiller sitting next to the driver of this beat up pickup with his one front paw/arm hanging out the side of the truck. Lots of stray dogs in this area.

We were on a back road near a trailer park and were seriously scared. We received the "you don't belong here in this neck of the woods" stare. Not good. Poverty is extremely high in this area. A local blog site states there is a lot of burglery and theft. We noticed most of the buildings in the area we visited right by the lake have bars on the windows.

You really have to visit the outlying area for yourself. I have never seen such poor people in my life as I did on our jaunt around the lake and the area. We had thought about a summer home in that area because of the cheap land, but decided that the copper would end up missing if the home was unattended, not to mention everything else.

The people may be extremely nice once you get to know them so I cannot pass judgement. I actually felt sorry for these people because of the amount of poverty I saw here.

I have heard fishing is great

Lake people are a certain type of people. Most are down to earth, no matter their bank account and like to have a good time.
If you like a laid back lifestyle, I say go for it!

Moss is outside of Gainesville, which isn't exactly west of DFW.
