Hi,

I am about to move to Dallas and attend Ut Soutwestern Medical School as a grad student.
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a safe 1 bedroom apartment max price 600/month within 1-5 miles of western Medical Center, 5323 Harry Hines Boulevard, Dallas, TX 75235.

I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks

Under $600 a month will not get you a very nice place in that area. In fact $700 is probably too low now. Expect to pay $750 a month for an efficiency, and over $900 for a full 1 bedroom. Rent is on the rise in that area($1.50+ a sq ft). Anything below $600 a month will be dangerous, or a complete dump. They've built tons of new buildings around UT Southwestern and down further on Maple ave. Places get leased up quick. The The Southwestern Historic Apartment Living | Dallas Apartment Rentals on maple is close, and their second phase is almost done.

As Ronnie there are a lot of new places right around UTSW but it's doubtful you'll find anything for $600, even though parts of the surrounding neighborhood are still kind of sketchy. What about sharing with a roommate? I'm sure there must be tons of other grad students/residents in your same position. You could share a nicer place than you'd get on your own for $600.

I second this and recommend a roommate. Cheap is dangerous in that area. Check out the apartments owned by the university, Inwood on the Park, and 5225 Maple

I will be moving to Dallas UT Southwestern in a couple of months and safety is my biggest concern. I'm moving from California where the rent is high (currently pay $1800-for a 2 bedroom) so I am not sure what is average rent for the area. I only need a one bedroom so if I can cut that in half, I will be very happy! Safety and a short commute are on the top of my list. Any advice, tips?

You should be able to find a decent apartment for $900-$1000 a month. Look into the 5225 Maple building mentioned above. And there are lots of other new buildings being built in that area. There's a huge new Krogers and a slow upscale transformation going on. As a California native, I'll be the first to say 'Welcome to Texas!'

Both DART rail green & orange lines have stops at the medical center if you want to look elsewhere and ride the train to give you move flexibility in finding a place to live. There are sometimes reasonably priced places near University of Dallas, that's a safe area on the Orange Line.

Any areas you would recommend on the green/orange line for townhomes/condos?

You might check apartments in Carrollton. $600 is a low budget and have never, ever heard of a townhouse with that kind of rent.
