Sounds like a first world problem to me.

A separate suite for in-law visits is a good suicide/divorce/homicide prevention plan.

Or they could just stay in a hotel.

You can't put your own or your spouse's parents in hotel. Whole point of the visit is to spend time with their kid and grand kids. It's like asking parents to put kids up for adoption instead of going through the trouble of raising them.

I agree. A guest suite is a must have if you have family and friends in other states or other countries.

No, it's not the same thing.

If having in-laws in the house is going to lead to a lot of strife, trust me, it's easier to put them in a hotel OR, if the point of the visit is for them to spend time with the kids, try sending your kids to their house instead.

My in-laws destroyed my marriage. I know what I'm talking about. If I had it to do over again, I would have demanded that my MIL stay in a hotel when she visited us.

If in-laws are toxic for your marriage then of course its a good idea to keep some distance. Still, a guest suite is a good thing to have.

My in-laws are very nice and independent people but I feel its a good idea to have some privacy for both parties. Same thing with other guests, I don't want them to have to share bathrooms with us or children. They come from abroad and stay for several weeks,it would be nice if they or even my own parents or siblings or friends stay on lower level and our family on second floor. I understand its different for every family.
