Relocating to Dallas
Posted here before but just got back from Dallas and I thought it was a beautiful city.Question my wife will be flying down with me in Jan to look at neighborhoods and wondering(R.E. agent only showed me Plano) ,if Lower Greenville might be the place to look when we come down next time.We are looking to rent for about a year before buying. We have a daughter who is almost 3 and a newborn.Wife doesn't have to work and will have a car but would like to live somewhere that still has an artsy feel to it that she can still walk to eat and shop.I will be working on crescent court in Dallas so I would like a short time commuting everyday.Anyone with suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Your Realtor really did you wrong by only showing you Plano. Especially if you are going to be working in Uptown Dallas (which is what we call the neighborhood around the Crescent). Some Realtors are specialists in one area, and they don't tend to show anything else. It sounds like you got hooked up with one of those.
East Dallas and the M-Streets is a great area (that's the Greenville Avenue area). Look in the 75214 and 75206 zip codes.
Here are some photos I took of the area:

Sadly, there are WAY TOO MANY realtors out there w/ false preconceived notions that anything out of their little box they live in is "bad". Running across realtors with that attitude in Plano, Frisco & McKinney is EASY to do They never venture south of 190 hardly and never stray far from the DNT. Ask your realtor when the last time she herself drove downtown or anywhere along Greenville or LBJ.

The commute from lower greenville to Uptown would be 10-15 mins.

If you're working in Uptown in the Crescent Court area and your wife wants something relatively artsy, there's no reason to look in Plano. Is it because you want more house for the money? The commute's going to eat you alive though. And, especially if you're going to be renting at first, there's really no reason you shouldn't be able to find something closer to where you're going to be working and playing.
Did you get away from the real estate agent's clutches long enough to explore Dallas at all on your own?

Not bad mouthing R.E., but was pushing Plano hard.Plano was very nice just not for me.Still open to suggestions of areas since schools aren't much of an issue for a couple of more years.I am trying to find a place that is open to all since I am a heavily tattooed professional who wants somewhat openess when the suit and tie come off on the weekends(not that other people's thoughts of me really matter but people can be pretty close minded even here in N.Y.).Thank You to all for your replies and I can't wait to bring my family to Texas and call it home.

Try Lakewood and Lake Highlands along w/ Richardson Heights. All are much closer to downtown than Plano and have a totally different vibe than anywhere in Plano.
