Exxon moving corporate headquarters to Dallas

Houston was not considered for Exxon's new corporate headquarters because executives decided it should not be in the same location as one of the company's major operating divisions, said John Walsh, president of Friendswood Development Co., the Exxon subsidiary in Houston that handled the site search.

Exxon officials believed the presence of the corporate headquarters could erode the autonomy and independence of the division headquarters if it were located right next door,Walsh said. "They made the decision early on they did not want to locate near one of their operating groups," he said.

We'll see. Google owns Motorola Mobility now and has put a gazillion dollars behind the development of what will be their new flagship smartphone, the Moto X (which will be assembled in Fort Worth). Obviously, it won't be easy competing with Apple and Samsung, but with Google involved, who knows.

You're exactly right. Google didn't buy Motorola Mobility just for the patents.

I was living and working in Houston for a pipeline company by the name of Texas Eastern in the late 80s when
Exxon moved corporate from Manhatten to North Texas and I remember how pizzed-off people in Houston were because they didn't get the headquarters. So anyway FWIW, I remember that another explanation offered at the time that the Dallas-area was chosen over Houston was because of the stability of American Airlines at DFW under the management of Bob Crandall vs the zoo like atmosphere and uncertainty in Houston with the notorious Frank Lorenzo calling the shots at Houston's hub airline Continental. If others can remember back to those days, it was rumored that Lorenzo was constantly accompanied by bodyguards because he was so reviled by the airlines unions, and that was especially true on days when he flew on Continental.

The statement above about why XOM moved to Dallas rather than Houston is from the horses mouth. The guy quoted lead the city search that resulted in Irving relocation. Houston was never in the running for the reason stated...separate strategic and operations. Decisions like this are expected to last long long term and there is nothing long term about the airline business so who was running what airline did not have a thing to do with it.... that an external transient red herring

Does anybody really believe that the top management at Exxon, (Rex Tillerson and others) will not at least have their own offices, in the new, North Harris County campus? Where the "official" HQ, is said to reside, will in effect, be meaningless.

Of course they may have. But if they live and spend their time and money in Dallas/Irving whats your point?

I think where Exxon is spending its corporate money (Houston), is more important than where a few of the top execs have a house, and maybe a couple of cars. How many properties are in the companies name in Houston, that will be used as temporary housing for these exec's? You don't think they will be staying in Hotels when they are in town? I doubt that... Does Irving get any more tax benefit from that building Exxon has there, because it is called HQ? NO, in fact they are probably giving up tax incentives to keep that building called HQ.

So other than where their wives get their hair done, and where the kids go to school, it is absolutely meaningless.

Sounds like someone has sour grapes to me.

To have the World HQ and decision makers of one of the top U.S. companies reside in your metro area is a big deal.

Houstonians want the hq moved there for two reasons.
#1. To be able to claim the #1 Fortune 500 company in their metro. To them Exxon being in Dallas is a 1-up for Dallas...they wanna change that once and for all.
#2. To be able to rub it in Dallas's face. Lets face it. If xom moved its hq down to the Woodlands after xx years, dallasites would never hear the end of it. You know..stuff like Dallas droped the ball. Exxon finally woke up.Dallas is losing Forrune 500 companies. Exxon moved to the best reigion of the state because(fill in the blank).

That's really what all the fuss is about.
