I was confused and I thought my husbands job was going to be next to Dallas/ Love airport but he's actually going to be next to DFW airport. Would the commute from McKinney be a long one? MapQuest says it's 35 miles away but in heavy traffic that doesn't mean anything. Does traffic back up towards Irving? Also, is anyone familiar with this commute?

4005 Christopher Way, Plano, TX 75024
to
6012 W. Campus Circle Drive, Irving TX 75063 (hubby's Job)

MapQuest says it's only 24 miles away and it takes about 30 minutes but what's the REAL deal?

What areas do you recommend for a family with 6 kids ages 6-16, needing a 5 bedroom house, close to work and about 2000 a month for rent?

Hubby will be commuting to 6012 W. Campus Circle Drive, Irving TX 75063

Thanks!

You can commute from McKinney or Plano to DFW, but there's no reason to. The highway is a toll road, and the tolls add up quickly. It's usually about $4 a day round trip.

There are several great communities that are very close to DFW: Grapevine, Euless, and Bedford will have homes in your price range. Finding a 5-bedroom rental is going to be tough, but I'm sure there's one out there. All three of these cities would give your husband a very short commute, and they have good schools, too.

It is actually $5 round trip from independence pkwy so from McKinney it might be even higher depending on where in McKinney. If school district is not a problem, why wouldn't like to live in the beautiful Las Colinas..

Probably because there won't be any 5 bedroom rentals for $2,000/mo there!!

OP, NO- you do not want your husband commuting daily to DFW. Yikes! I would even have steered him away from McKinney-Love. That alone can be an hour + in traffic during rush hour. Re-read Christie's post above. She has some good suggestions for you.

The big factor will be ... where can you lease a home the size you need for $2000 a month.
You can want to live anywhere but if you can't find a house, you can't live there.

I would say your best bet might be (as Christie mentioned) Bedford, Euless, North Arlington / Grand Prarie, Irving or Lewisville.

Lease homes are extremely hard to find. Hope you have good credit.

I just googled the route from my house in McKinney to your husbands work, it's 34 miles and typically 38 min according to google. With traffic right now at 8:20am, it says it's currently 47 min. I would say that is typical for rush hour. Most people who say that it takes an hour + to get anywhere from McKinney don't travel on 121 much. It's the fastest moving toll road around the area, period. It's never taken me more than an hour to get to the airport, no matter whether it's rush hour or not. Usually it's 40-45 min.

However, that's still a long enough commute time for me that I'd be searching for something closer, probably in Plano right off the tollway or 121.

So...some actual facts. Leaving from McKinney (Hardin/121) area, to the DFW exit (114) takes approx. 35-45 min. I leave at 6:45am and get to the exit anywhere between 7:20-7:30, everyday M-F in morning rush hour.

Your husbands commute would take him down 35 on google maps...for sure NOT a good option. I would send him down the DNT to the PGBT (190) and go from there avoiding 35. Expensive...sure...but time is worth the money. Good luck.
