Is the mosquito problem in the Dallas area really as bad as what I've read so far? From what I've read, it seems like I can't go outside without spraying myself with some repellent.

I live in Lakewood and it's just awful. It wasn't always so bad but seems like it's gotten 10x worse in the last couple years. Last year they had planes crop dusting the city with repellent. My in laws live in UP and have a high end spray system in their back yard. It barely slows them down. To put it in perspective, I lived in south Louisiana for 13 years and it was not as bad there.

The mosquito problem here is atrocious.

If I go out in shorts/tank top in the morning or any time between about 4 and 9 pm, I have to wear repellant otherwise I am eaten alive. I get bitten even when I'm putting repellant on. That's how aggressive the mosquitoes here are.

I make my own repellant which is very effective because DEET gives me a headache and I hate the way it makes my skin feel. The stuff I make myself works just as well as the commercial DEET products.

I generally don't need to wear repellant until the evening, but I do need to "OFF" myself then if I plan to poke a toe outdoors.

It's interesting to read, cause I just talked to my husband about it. He visited the family last summer and spend some weeks in different parts of Texas, one of it in Dallas. He was really concerned because of the West Nile Virus....but he didn't see one single mosquito for the whole time. Even when they stayed in some park by a lake.

We went to a large park for the 4th of July.
We "offed" ourselves before going...
We should have "june bugged" ourselves because we were getting bombed by these
Little buggers big time!!!! And they hurt when they aim for your ear, throat or eyes!!!!

Maybe it's the spraying by the cities, but they don't seem as bad as last year.

Mosquitos not bad this year. Ilive in NE White Rock between skillman and abrams. Last year it was horrible. We found out late in summer that one of the abandoned projects on US 75 and Fitzhugh was a square block of a stagnat pond that bred mosquitos that would take off in hoardes every night to ravish everything south of it.
