A DISD school winning an award for academic excellence? Whatever! It's a lie. The only award students in the DISD achieve are: (1) for their drive-by marksmanship; or (2) selling the most drugs to 7 year-olds. It's in a book at the Allen-McKinney-Murphy Library. Look it up!

It's a scientific fact that the closer you get to Oklahoma, the better the schools are. I'm sorry. That's just the way it is.

Your story must be wrong. "Frisco, Frisco, Frisco" are the only words my Realtor knows. So she must be right.

You may want to consider stand up comedy because you have the gift LOL!

Great job Lakewood!
My thought exactly!!! I think it is awesome that he is SO proud of his neighborhood school!! I wish that could be said of all Dallas Metro residents.

Thanks PG - I went to two events just last night - one at a Deep Ellum Art Gallery for scholarships for ESL students http://www.gustavoscholarship.org/Scholarship_Recipients.htmland (broken link) and the monthly happy hour Lakewood-Now.net - Dallas Texas - online community newspaper at Bailey's Back Room for our high school alumni. Both were packed. Maybe we are a rare breed these days but we feel we are 'the real' Dallas. Where else are you going to see near-senior citizens wearing goofy t-shirts about their high school -- like:

"In 1969 Man Landed on the Moon, Thousands Went to Woodstock, Richard Nixon became President and I graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School"

Back Talk Lakewood/East Dallas: Lakewood Elementary gets Blue Ribbon

"Congratulations to Lakewood Elementary, one of 26 schools named a 2008 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School. This puts them officially on the (relatively) short list of Texas’ academically superior schools.."

Lakewood Elementary Listed on Honor Roll | Articles & Archives | Lakewood (http://www.peoplenewspapers.com/ME2/Audiences/dirmod.asp?sid=&nm=&type=Publishing&mod=Publicatio ns%3A%3AArticle&mid=8F3A7027421841978F18BE895F87F7 91&AudID=0C60FF0FEDEB42CAA527EA9D73BBC489&tier=4&i d=C102C1D9E52546B499AE39AB0DEEC6F1 - broken link)

"TBEC is a nonprofit organization started nearly 20 years ago to help improve education in Texas. The honor roll is a way for schools and students to receive recognition for working hard to better their scores, said Charly Simmons, a TBEC volunteer.

“TBEC picks commended because it’s a higher standard than passing the test,” Simmons said.

The honor roll also takes into account improvement over a period of the last three years, he said.

Though Lakewood’s commended scores in reading, math, and writing showed slight improvement during the past three years, it was the science scores that sky-rocketed.

In 2006, about 22 percent of students were commended in science. In 2008, the percentage more than tripled to 68 percent.."
