What is the average cost to get a well and if there are any permits required? I guess HOA should be notified?

I'm not sure about the DFW area but water wells was running around $7,000 back in Midland. I can't recall any permits, it just seems like they drilled when and where they wanted.

I am pretty sure both the city (any of them) and your HOA would object. It's not like you are out in the country! You need a permit and I doubt you'd get it.

The cost of drilling a well depends on how far away the water table is, and what kind of soil and rock you have to go through to get to it. You also have to consider there will be a well house needed to contain the pump and filtration equipment. I honestly, have no idea what this costs in DFW, but I know my friend who lives north of Denton had to pay $10,000 to have her well drilled because she lives on a limestone formation.

Short answer: unless you are watering a football field-sized yard, its probably cheaper to just buy water from the city.

Check with your HOA. Likely your CCRs prohibit them. Will save you the time wasted researching.

THIS^^^^

And wells can generally cost anywhere between $3,000 and $20,000 depending on soil type, presence of rock, depth of water table and "good water" versus "mediocre water", etc.. Some areas can cost even more.

Too expensive to justify the cost in most cases but a blessing for future drought situations.

Getting a drilling rig into your backyard might be a problem in the average inner city yard.

There is the matter concerning mineral rights. Actually, I'd just put the well off until society breaks down, the text messaging goes silent, and zombies start running wild in the streets looking to eat flesh. Then, after the government is no more, digging a water well will be legal. Actually, in digging the well, be careful as the moist clay soil above will tend to topple over caving into the hole which can lead to very serious injury.
