Many people feel that having someone hovering behind them, waiting for them to finish whatever they are doing (parking, salad bar, self-check out), is rude, because it makes them feel rushed, hence uncomfortable.

For that reason, it's more polite to wait at a discrete distance for them to finish, instead of pulling up right behind them. (But not so far that a third party swoops in to cut the line). This family was probably retaliating for what they perceived as your rudeness in crowding or hurrying them. It's like continuing to drive at a moderate pace, not speeding up, when a BMW (for example) comes up behind and tailgates you on the highway -- they didn't want to give the pushy person the satisfaction.

Best solution though is to establish eye contact and gesticulate to ask, "are you leaving? Do you mind... Etc?"
