Also don't think you can use the time in the car for work (conference calls, etc.). Driving I-35 from Dallas to well north of Denton requires your full attention. Denton is your best bet. Or convincing your employer to let you office out of home, if you really will be regularly flying out of DFW. The commute from Denton, or even North Dallas, to DFW is no picnic in the park either.

Thanks again for the responses.

I am certainly rethinking the commute, directions give it as 1hr 10 min or so but how long do you think it'd actually be? (probably would be leaving around 6am)

And no matter what, I will definitely not be renting any place before looking around and testing out the drive now.

Um, it's 70 miles from Uptown! The drive from Uptown to 121 via 35 can take 30-35 minutes, some posters on this forum have said allow for 40. From that point, it's another 50 miles. I'd allow 1.5 minutes per mile from there on- it might move faster but you never know when there is going to be bad weather or a wreck or two. So all together, that's approaching 2 hours each direction to give you enough time to not be late.

Current traffic at 6:45pm (about 45 minutes after the worst of rush hour) is showing about a 90 minute drive from Gainsville back into uptown.

I REALLY would suck it up and live in Denton. Even then, you're going to be in a car commuting 30 minutes each direction.

That, or find another job IN Dallas.

Keep in mind that there are various interesting suburban neighborhoods in the area with their own hot spots for dining, bars, etc. In fact, lots of people go into Dallas only occasionally for entertainment. That's a bit different than in NY.

That long commute will really affect your quality of life, and even your weekday social life.

Denton really is a cool town which, because it's in the shadow of Dallas and Fort Worth, doesn't really have a national profile so people think it's this dusty burg in the middle of nowhere. The site Idolator poked fun at the NY Times for having that "wow, they actually have electricity and everything" attitude when it did a Travel piece on Denton a few years back.

New York “Times” Surprised To Find Bands In Large College Town | Music News, Reviews, and Gossip on Idolator.com

But it's a city of more than 100,000 with a couple of major colleges -- and it has the bonus of being within driving distance of Dallas or Fort Worth for major concerts/sporting events, etc. You really should come out and make the drive between Denton and Gainesville at rush hour to see if it's workable.

The other thing you haven't mentioned is how much rent you're willing to pay. In addition to paying for gas to make that Dallas-Gainesville drive, Uptown rents are perhaps the highest in the Metroplex. I haven't priced rents in Denton but I'm guessing they're a lot less than Uptown. So you'd be out of lots of time and money just to live in Uptown. It's not worth it.

Not to mention the cost of your psychiatric care after you go insane from that drive.
