Urban gentrification is taking place all across America and S Dallas/Fair Park is not going to be any different. It showed up by way of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

I've been to South Dallas for Karaoke and couldn't help but notice something that would never happen in the worst hoods of Chicago, L.A., Detroit, and NY. There were white people frequenting the establishment. I asked one guy I started talking to if he was with code enforcement and he said no he was just there to have a good time, and sure enough he got up and did his song! Another night there was a young white Chiropractor there with friends. I was in such shock when he got up to do a song I took his picture with my cell to send to my friends in CA. I titled it "white dr. in da hood doing karaoke"! At that point I wondered how bad can it be down here?

Also isn't Fair Park where the state fair is held? And I am sure that's where I had to drive one night to the Dallas Opera. I found it strange it was located there with all the horror stories about crime.

I find that most of the rhetoric about how bad things are in South Dallas usually comes from those that live elsewhere and never frequent the area.

You were probably at a bar near exposition park, which is not really South Dallas. It is a bar scene and is really the border that you do not want to cross.

Go down there during the day time and drive a few blocks south of the bars and you will see what I mean, just go early in the morning and don't stop your car.

Also, this area will not be gentrified or undergo a urban renewal for decades, if ever, especially with the real estate crash. There are many more areas north of I-30 that are not infested with as much crime and filth and where people actually want to live.

Billdfw I was at MLK and Atlanta(Emarald City Grill). Not sure what kind of neighborhood it is since I park outside the establishment and get in my car and go up the street to 45 afterward. Maybe I was stil in a decent area??? I'm still confused about what's what out here.

By the way according to DPD crime is down!!

Hi caligurltotx,Regardless of what billdfw says, the area over here is coming up -- and no, it is not Exposition Park, which is closer to Main Street. If you were at Atlanta and MLK, you were just a few blocks from my house. I have not gone into Emerald City Grill, although I have seen it on my way home several times and wondered about it. What kind of place is it? Just a bar or also a restaurant? I've started going to House of BBQ down the street (closer to 45/175), but I can't eat BBQ all the time -- I need to branch out.

MLK and Atlanta is pretty ghetto. I guess to some people it isnt too bad. Someone has to live there right? Being that its on MLK makes it a little bit safer since lots of people are in that area. But if you venture off MLK and go down some side streets it can be very dangerous. Especially if the people there can tell you arent from around there. I have seen many bums, hookers walking around that area. I drive down MLK from lamar to I45 everyday.

And you have to remember everyone has different standards. One man's trash can be another man's treasure.

Go one and two streets northwest of MLK, between 175/45 and Malcolm X. You may change your mind about the "ghetto." South Boulevard has some homes that are comparable to the old homes on Swiss Avenue. The prairie-style homes and craftsman/prairie-style homes are reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright and the other leaders in the style. Many of them have original stained-glass windows and other art deco touches.

Now since I'm getting a bit touchy about attacks on my neighborhood -- the place where I live and work -- by people who do not live here or work here, I guess I will ignore this forum for awhile. The moderator has already decided that one of my posts included something he deemed a personal attack (it was not meant as such, but mea culpa), and I don't want to get all worked up again.

ParkRow, ECG is definitely a restaurant/bar with a stage for live bands. Very small and intimate atmosphere. I have only been on Tues for my friend's Karaoke night and the nice part is that his band plays the music for the singers. No karaoke machines. And I can tell you the chicken wings platter is a BIG hit. I am working out and eating right so it was killing me everytime a waitress brought out a plate for someone last time I was there. BEST fried chicken wings I've had! The atmosphere is very fun and laid back. My friend happens to be a comedian also so he keeps it lively. Also, before the karaoke they do swing out dance lessons.
