Downtown, Dallas, TX

My daughter moved from Dallas to Atlanta about 6 months ago and the Atlanta traffic is all she complains about, but my daughter lived in southern Dallas burbs where traffic is a non-issue.

I live in Dallas and travel to Atlanta a lot to meet clients. There is no comparison between Atlanta and Dallas traffic. Atlanta is worse. I have experienced traffic jam in I-285 at 10 PM in the night. Dallas traffic is bad only during the peak times and there are alternate roads you can use.

My rear end tells me that traffic in Atlanta is somewhat worse. A number of traffic studies seem to say the same thing.

There are alternate routes. If the highway is bad, you can usually get on a 6-lane surface street with lights that are timed somewhat sensibly. There are highways that move both north-to-south and east-to-west around the city. Highways! Not just one. IMHO, the only real downsides are construction traffic (but hey, at least they build roads here) and left lane hogs. I thought left lane hogs were bad in Atlanta. I had no idea they could be this bad...
Good description.

Atlanta traffic is MUCH worse. I too heard these rumors that Dallas has horrible traffic before I moved here but so far the only horrible traffic I've encountered was on 635 due to the extensive construction.

I have spent ample time in Atlanta and live in Plano (commute to Dallas). Traffic in Atlanta is far worse. The problem is there is nowhere near as many highways in Atlanta as there is in Dallas. The roads they do have are not laid out as well either. There are simply many more options as far as what roads you can take in Dallas vs. Atlanta.

I spent over 20 years in Atlanta, and I agree it is much, much worse in Atlanta. Only 2 times in the 1.5 years I have lived here has my commute been as bad as my DAILY commute in Atlanta. And I live 10 miles further from the office here than I did in Atlanta.

Oh, thank you! These responses are very encouraging! We've just heard over and over again that the commutes in Dallas are terrible, but I guess from our reference point, they won't be so bad. That is a relief!
