That was abnormally hot, but our summers are pretty brutal. You won't be able to buy anything frozen at the grocery store because it will be a melted mess by the time you get home with it.

I was hoping to get some opinions on this. I've been car free by choice for almost 10 years now and I'm considering moving to uptown. I usually walk about 5 miles per day and accomplish all of my errands during my walks. I am semi-retired and can work from home, so I can schedule my walks for off peak hours, when the sun isn't out in full force.

During the summer months, if I avoid the peak sun, how realistic is it to walk a few miles outdoors every day? I know it will still be hot, but I'm wondering if it's reasonable to do this on a daily basis.

Thank you for your responses.
Not sure if you're aware, but Uptown is mostly single young professionals, so if you're older than 35 you may feel quite out of place in the area.

You could easily do this as far as distances. It just depends on you tolerance for the heat. If you get a bike and utilize the trolley you should be fine. I would also suggest looking into UberX. You could get anywhere in Uptown/Downtown for about $5 if the weather is really bad.

I think you could do it, summers here are brutal but your body does get used to it when you go out every day and it gradually gets hotter during spring. (I used to work in construction, outside and in a warehouse / shop without air conditioning). Avoiding the afternoon hours is a good idea. Also, carrying an umbrella (or a sombrero) probably really helps even if it looks dorky.

More older folks are down sizing to the area though because it is close to all of the Arts and downtown activities. Lots of amenities that they appreciate as well as the younger people. Walking to restaurants and bars; less driving; close proximity to hospitals and doctors; fitness centers in house; and lots of activities to keep busy if one wants.

Good Luck. I truly hope that you enjoy the Uptown area.
