Did you have HOV lanes in Houston? Because the DNT doesn't have any. The "express" bus would move at the same speed as traffic...which is usually pretty darn slow in rush hour.

True but it takes away stress of driving and you can save time and money, not to mention opportunity of taking care of some work during commute. Most suburbs don't even have this option.

We did have HOV lanes which express buses used. I am not a mass transit fan by nature but riding rather than driving made me feel my work day ended when I boarded the bus in the evenings and did not start until I arrived at the office since I could read a book or paper or chat with the passengers. I rarely knew names but many rode the same bus regularly and would recognize the face at a restaurant and wonder where I knew them LOL.

So a longer ride on a business can feel shorter in my experience. I noticed a 35 minutes commute time of the route I mentioned but that was off rush hours.

OP can your wife adjust her schedule to avoid rush hours or is that impractical in her job?

I don't think her schedule is too flexible. Her new boss said most work 9-5, but "sometimes people come in earlier if they have work to do". Doesn't sound too flexible to me!

Maybe we're a bit spoiled - our first house was a brand new build, so that's what we're drawn too. But looking at other homes in West Plano, they look very nice too. I've noticed that some Plano addresses have other school districts listed as the schools- the school boundaries look very random?!

Are there any schools that we should consider avoiding? It seems like they all are fairly decent...thanks for everyone's responses. Not the answers I was hoping to hear, but needed to hear! Thank you!

The school districts are "independent" so they do not follow city boundaries.

To be honest, West Plano schools are as good or better than most privates. Lots here are usually 1/4 but plenty of homes with bigger lots as well. We had similar requirements and very happy with our choice, don't have to pay a fortune to privates and didn't have to settle for a condo in Park cities. $650k gets you a decent home here. No not as big and new as exurbs but considering the perks of location, resale and schools ... I would make the same decision if I have to make it today.

I don't understand why would someone suggest Lucas/ Fairview?
With all due respect, I recommended Lucas & Fairview because some of the folks relocating here are not familiar with those towns. The OP mentioned they liked Allen and did not care for Plano or Frisco, and Allen borders Lucas & Fairview, so thought it might be a good fit based on what they said they liked! If it's not a fit, oh well, but at least it gives them something else to look into!

West Plano honestly isn't THAT much closer, yet you seem to default to it in every single post ad nauseam. There are many nice areas others prefer to West Plano for different reasons, but definitely glad to hear you like it there! =)

I agree that there are few areas that offer better location, commute, schools and houses compared to West Plano but they ask more $$$$$$. If OP's budget was 2 million then I would suggest those. By the way Lucas and Fairview aren't on that list, though they serve well to people with different needs.
