130 wouldnt be good to get to McAllister park which is closest to 281. I prefer the drive on 281 as it is much less stressful and prettier, but if time is of an issue 35 will be faster unless there is an accident.

You can take 281, which is prettier (I guess...not a big attraction as far as I'm concerned) and toll free but takes a bit longer or take 130 but do NOT go all the way to I10. Instead you would exit onto toll road 45 north of town and then take i35 south the rest of the way. It is not as scenic and you have to pay a few dollars, but it is a little faster.

That sounds like a plan, taking 35 then 130 then 45. My MIL is giving me this "I told you so" lecture about how much worse of a drive it is to SA than Houston, but maybe I'm naïve - I don't think it's that much different?

IMHO 281 is the most scenic( spring, fall) route to get there unless you have crying toddlers on back seat then 30 minutes feels like 130 minutes.

Having lived in Austin, I'd say that 35 there is just fine outside of M-F rush hour.

The real problem on 35 is the endless construction down between Temple and West. There are a couple miles-long stretches of highway where the shoulders are gone and concrete barriers are up on each side of the two lanes. All it takes is one accident in that stretch (as I experienced during txgiving weekend) and it can add an hour or more to your drive.
